These beauties on S. St. Asaph were built in 1820 (right two) and 1840 (left), and are nothing less than spectacular. Now that the leaves have gone we get a few months to appreciate all that these wonderful buildings have to offer with unobstructed views. #extraordinaryalx#oldtownalexandria#historicdistrict#otx
Mom always calls me “Lucky Lou” and as far as moms always being right go... she’s got it. I got to live with this handsome guy in this beautiful place for almost two years. We brought home our second little love here and enjoyed the first few months of our engagement. Now I get to move up to CT with my fiancé and my frenchie and continue this wonderful life together there with family. So thankful for these photos by @aaronandwhitneyphoto to forever remember the start of our life here together @djplattinum I love doing life with you! At the wedding, we should maybe look at the camera 🎥🙈. #movingtrucktomorrow#extrodinaryalx#oldtownalexandria

Laurence Hill, one of Alexandria's first city council members, bought this lot in 1814 for $1400 and built this brick residence for his family. Laurence was a cooper who had a cooper shop on the waterfront around the corner. Yet his shop sadly burned to the ground in 1810 after another cooper maker left a candle burning in his shop and bam, there goes the neighborhood, well at least part of it. Btw, I had a house fire in 2003 that also started in a neighbor's house. The fire was so big, it caused my house and the house on the other side of it to catch fire. I was out of my house for over a year while it was being renovated, so let me just say I'm very fire conscious now. And I turn into Mrs Kravitz trying to see what my neighbors are doing (or not doing)! So what is a cooper maker? Don't worry. I didn't know either. In short, he makes barrels (or casks, buckets, tubs, butter churns, or anything that is wooden and held together with hoops). Apparently you could make some money in the day doing this, because this house is nice. Laurence sold it 15 years later for $225O, which is a handsome profit if you think about it. The house was victorianized in 1884, which I normally hate, but I love the pagoda influence that was added to the roof and dormers. And notice anything? This house is freestanding. I think after his fire, he wasn't taking any chances with neighbors so he put some land between them. Respect, cooper maker! #favoritehomesofoldtown#oldtownalexandria#alexandriava#extraordinaryalx#architecture#historicpreservation#oldhouselove#SLhomes
