Last year, Cat and I decided to travel to Myanmar. In our minds, Myanmar was the Cuba of the east. A country that for decades existed virtually independent from the west, but more recently expanded its welcome more broadly. Basically, Cat and I wanted to see the country before the unfortunate consequences of globalization ran amuck. We found out quickly that we (to a certain degree) were too late. Getting off the plane and exiting the airport in Yangon you begin to see the hoards of people waiting for their family members, large signs pointing confused travels like us to the exit, and of course a large "Welcome to Myanmar" sign for the entire cohort of travelers to see. It just so happens that welcome sign doubled as a Coca Cola ad. I thought to myself, "this is what the start of globalization looks like". Upon leaving the airport, I continued to take aim at the litter of billboard ads placed along the roads. One trend stuck out above all others - every single model was white!! Mestizo to be more precise - essentially they looked like me, an American, half-asian half-white guy - they looked nothing like the Burmese people they were trying to sell to.
This disconnect is even more apparent in the Philippines, a county that he been subjected to white-washing for generations. The exportation of American popular culture, along with more subtle forms of imperialism created a pervasive dissidence with a culture's general phenotype. All leading to women thinking they're too "brown", their noses are too flat, their limbs aren't long enough. Personally, I've never met a people, that represent such a higher degree of "enoughness" - the beautiful, the full heartedness, the implicit kindness. Qualities not to be watered down, or whitened.
May it's his last Match as a pro-soccer player... But its for sure his last one as a teammember and captain of my fav-soccer Club, FC Winterthur. After 17(!) years he will leave the Club.
I was able to tell the story of his day with my Fuji #x100f and the #xt2 -
