Northern view from Steptoe Butte State Park. A quartzite island in the midst of basalt rock formations with a thick layer of loess sediments leftover from retreating glaciers. That layer of loess is what makes the Palouse such fertile land for wheat, fields of which stretch from the Butte for miles and miles and miles. Wheat mostly gets trucked from here to the Snake River, which is the majority of the 2.5 billion tons of cargo shipped downriver annually. The windmills in the distance are connected to the USACE power grid, which sends electricity as far north as British Columbia and all the way to Southern California. #geology#geologyiscool#optoutdoors#palouse#steptoe#steptoebutte#washington#rural#farmersofamerica#wheatfields#agriculture#usace#windpower#cleanenergy
