The giant carp in Fortitude Valley is symbolic to Chinese mythology, representing strength and power. The carp swim upstream against strong current and the strong will leap over the waterfall. The dragon’s gate is at the top of the waterfall and if a carp is able to leap over the dragon’s gate it will be transformed into a mighty dragon. A Chinese dragon’s large, inconspicuous scales indicate its origin from a carp.
The swirling backbone of this sculpture is, like China’s Yellow River, synonymous with the snake like shape of the Brisbane River representing the city’s backbone in economic, cultural and social life.
