I'm growing more and more positive that Serge Lutens is becoming one of my favorite perfumers-"storytellers". I don't necessarily have to love his creations but I'm enjoying the process of comprehending the philosophy behind them. Another fragrance of my Serge Lutens collection - L'orpheline. Complex and sophisticated, it makes you think of the dualities - contradiction and harmony, love and rejection, wisdom and annihilation, even life and AFTERlife, for that matter. Somehow it manages to balance between the opposites; it's so abstract, and yet convincing. In my mind, L'orpheline is definitely what is called "a young body with an old soul". It has a well balanced composition of smoky incense, musc, spices, and I'm definitely sensing a subtle presence of floral accords. Its smoky notes are cold and somewhat synthetic though - just like they should be.
