“Present”, 12”x16”, oil on linen panel. This painting was started from life. My model told me she had been feeling anxious about something for the past couple days, so I suggested she try listening to a guided meditation app I use daily. She loved it and it really helped her relax and feel better. I, along with so many people, struggle with being present, especially in this world of distractions. Painting and meditation help me reign in my focus to remember what’s important in my life.
Another result of my creative juggernaut status post St. Vincent concert whilst being a snowed-in sweetie: this Snow White-esque “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...” piece. That’s me, night of concert, layered onto my neon painting “Bubblegum” (11x14 inches, acrylic ink & pencil on heavyweight yupo). Original piece available on my website up there 👆🏻. #sarahhartart
I did do another #klompenseries shoe today, but I'll have to post it tomorrow for Day 16 of my #30daypaintfromlifechallenge ! Instead, here is a small study on oil paper. Working out some colors/composition for problem solving on a large commission...it will get there. It always does!
Yes I know it’s not paint...I’m consumed though with both color and fiber at the moment and will be for the next two weeks at least. Prepping to lead a training for top hair professionals at the end of the month and I couldn’t be more excited! The universe is so benevolent and abundant and I am practicing every moment being open to receiving its gifts and savoring the wonder. Who knew a square pic of yarn could inspire such thought...
Panel priming day! Here I'm trying out three different types of primer on wood for painting in oil: oil based, clear acrylic, and traditional gesso (chalk based.) The oil leaves a very slick, slightly glossy surface to work on, but should retain a little bit of the canvas tooth. The acrylic is going to be slightly rough, but I'll get to keep that natural tan color as a base. Finally, traditional gesso creates a porcelain smooth surface that tends to be slightly absorbent.
Painting really begins at this stage for me as it's the first moment of contact with my materials--everything that follows is in a sense a response to the tactile relationship between the medium and the surface. If the oil slides or is absorbed, I'll choose one brush over another or I'll use more or less paint. These decisions are always present in the final outcome. I once read a description of oil painting as a addiction to the physical manipulation and alchemy of oil. That sounds about right to me.
Bonus points if someone can tell me what book that's from!
I taylor made this dress for myself as I couldn't find a single dress I loved. I must have ordered about 10 over a period of 2 months and none of them fitted me (very annoying as nothing ever fits me) they were almost always too big or the cut wasn't right. This silk dress (its bright pink in real life!) and chandelier earrings I wore for my for a very special occasion . Perhaps the most amazing dress I've ever worn. when I wear a dress of any kind whether it's black tie or day wear it has to be comfortable . I'm very bohemian at heart and I love my floating dresses and clothes that I feel totally comfortable and free in.
