Pair of 18thC English portraits by John Russell RA, of Charles Eliott and his wife, Eling Venn. Pastel on paper in gold frames, the second signed and dated 1789. Russell was official Painter-in-Crayon to George III and the Royal family from 1790, and was regarded as one of the top British portraitists of his generation. Charles Elliott was a West End furniture-maker by Royal appointment who prepared the carriage for Admiral Nelson’s funeral in 1805. Both he and his wife were associated with the Clapham Sect of Church of England social reformers, who campaigned, amongst other things, for the abolition of the Slave Trade.
