from “Crematorium" (2014); Alexander Kargaltsev in collaboration with Valeriy Pecheykin
Alexander Kargaltsev is a Russian-born artist who fled Russia out of fear for his safety as a gay man. Now based in New York, Kargaltsev makes art that directly confronts bigotry within Russian society and the post-Soviet Russian state's persecution of its queer citizens. As the director of the New York-based world premiere of "Crematorium", a play by Valeriy Pecheykin which was banned in Moscow, Kargaltsev constructed a vivid representation of life in Russia as he and the gay men who remain there have known it: a life of unending paranoia and subordination.
It is estimated that 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner at some point in their lives. However, some national studies show that up to 70 per cent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime. We’ve come a long way! Thanks to over 75 generous donors, we will be able to complete the cycle of engagement activities we began 3 years ago in Cedar Rapids, Los Angeles and Miami. Those activities include oral history workshops, story circles, and in-progress play readings. These are vital to our aim of welcoming economically diverse audiences to Pang!, and to promoting cross-class dialogue on local hunger and other issues related to income disparity.
In order to bring Pang! to Los Angeles’s 24th Street Theatre in December, we need to raise the last $2,000 of our $10,000 all-or-nothing funding goal. $2,000 is a lot to raise in 2 days, but if half the people receiving this message give an average of $5 each, we will make it. Can you help us? I certainly understand if this isn’t the time for you to make a monetary contribution, but do keep in mind that even a small donation goes a long way. In any case, please consider spreading the word about the campaign via email or social media, and thanks!
This is the link to donate: Hatchfund.org/project/Pang
Please know that all donations are fully tax deductible.
Thank you to Pang!‘s generous donor community including:
Anchor Judith Martin-Straw, Leah Keith, Kenneth Foster, Lars Jorgensen, Margaret Jenkins, Rhea Turteltaub, and Peggy Ekberg. #hungerforachange#danfroot#hatchfund#performanceart#supportlivetheatre#supportart

2017.08.21 Clip 02. When birds started speaking up during max coverage of eclipse. Only the loudest can be heard on this. Heard Catbird make sounds I've never heard before! Cloud coverage happened & during the 13 minutes I was playing the image of eclipse moved off the page. I had to go inside after this - realized just how many times mosquitoes bit me while I was playing! #taodrumdailyimprov#drumflower#makingmusiccansaveyourlife#almost365#artspace1241
