Mobility Monday 🚨 🚨 -
Excessive flexing of the lower back during a squat aka the butt wink is one of the most commonly known and dreaded movement patterns in fitness. -
In my experience, there are 2 main reasons why people “butt wink” while descending into a squat: poor hip/ankle mobility and lack of motor control throughout the lumbo pelvic hip complex.

Today, we’ll focus on ankle/hip mobility. This is another one of my favorites. Notice as my right leg is fully extended, my hip position on the left causes me to “flatten” out my foot. Improving anterior hip mobility on the right and ankle dorsiflexion on the left. -

Today I’m going to extend this out to a full warmup. -
Most trainers have different warmup methods but I’ve found the proper way to prime the nervous system and prepare the body for a strength training session should have at least 3 parts: activation, mobilization, and excitation. Self myofascial release (foam rolling)/tissue manipulation is a welcome addition before mobilization to allow better/potential change in joint range of motion for example: rolling out pecs, traps, rhomboids, etc.

For those of us who spend multiples hours in the office hunched over a keyboard, you’ll definitely start to feel the effects of excessive scapular protraction; shoulders rounding, over-active traps, pects shut down. Then, you start feeling the physiological effects such as neck and back pain.

Time to retract those shoulder blades. I try to do these about 3-4 days a week but I highly recommend these on heavy push days (bench press, shoulder press).

Though I’ve made significant progress over the past year or so, mobility (and my love for burritos) has been my greatest challenge throughout my strength and HIIT workouts. As with many of you, my day to day (work) life consists of extended periods of sitting and typing on a keyboard resulting in tight shoulders and my hips in a constant state of flexion. Starting today, I’ll be sharing some of the exercises that I’ve used to help improve my movement patterns and overall mobility.

Key terms to remember: Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs) and Functional Range Conditioning (FRCs). These are various types of mobility exercise you can include in your warmup or on a rest day.

This exercise is one of my go-tos on leg day. This CAR exercise helps improve active, rotational movements in the hips and prepares you for a more fluid movement pattern during squats. Keys to performing this exercise successfully - slow/controlled movements and build a brace in your core (flex).

Water does so much more than simply hydrate you. It boosts energy, revs the metabolism, and nourishes the skin. For most 8 glasses of water a day is enough, which comes to about 1.9 litres.

Here’s an easy way to keep track of your water intake: Carry a 500ml bottle with you with 4 elastic bands wrapped around. After you finish a bottle, take of a band and refill the bottle. At the end of the day you should have removed all 4 bands.
