The #tanneries at #Fez in #Morocco are quite something to visit. For centuries the regional leather has been dyed and treated here. All sorts of colours are produced and various products are used to achieve those colours. Bird poo, cow urine and quicklime are just some of the agents used in this all natural and 100% manual process. The smell is quite something!!!
So for any of you who don’t know about me all that much, here’s a little insight for you. I’ve been working for UPS for 2 1/2 years now. I started as a part time package handler- aka I loaded tractor trailers from floor to ceiling, so if that doesn’t already sound miserable to you I did it on the midnight shift. From 2 1/2 years ago to today I have worked my way up through different positions and I now have a normal Monday-Friday daylight hours desk job in an office. So while all of you are enjoying the comfort and ease of ordering your holiday gifts and whatever else online from the comfort of your couch or bed, there’s a whole special group of people making sure your online purchases are getting to you and your loved ones on time. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to load a trailer up and late Saturday night I was told I had to go out on a short peak (holiday season) assignment to operations to help process volume they were not even close to expecting. After working Sunday at midnight until 8am straight through loading trailers without a break, I feel like I’ve been hit by a tractor trailer. So here’s an insight as some things I take to help keep my body healthy and bounce back. Working midnight can easily mess with your immune system and I woke up this morning, or well afternoon actually, with a very sore throat and I don’t mess around with that🙅🏽♀️with winter and being in Pittsburgh, it’s not the sunniest and prettiest of places so this year I decided to see what vitamin D can do for my mental health and help keep me focus and on track. I believe that mental health is just as important if not more important than your physical health 🤷🏽♀️ so if you’re ever feeling that your workout is lacking or you’re not getting anything out of what you’re doing, you can come load some tractor trailers with me if you’re interested! Hey! That could be us!! I think it is IS us! We've been #married 51 years and our Two-Year Thrive Anniversary is in early December.
I'm Debby, age 70, and my husband is Don, age 75.
Don has always been #active and in pretty #goodhealth . Sometimes he amazes me with all of the #physicallabor he can still do. After #retirement , he did tend to put on some weight, though.
As for me, well, I've been dealing with general #back and #jointdiscomfort . Thanks to Thrive, we are both doing much better now. It actually seems like we are getting #younger , instead of older!
My general discomforts and #healthchallenges are now calmed. For two incredible years, I've woken up #everymorning with a #smile on my lips and a #songinmyheart . For two #incredible years, we've gone on #planetrips , attended #sportingevents , #concerts , the #Kansas State Fair. As an added bonus, I've gone down five #clothing sizes during this time. As you can see in the photos, Don has also lost some inches.
I'm a lot more #social than Don and I've shared my story at many Thrive Locals. I love meeting people and have made many friends on my Thrive Journey.

Resistance training and Physical Labor Jobs! It's been about two and a half years now Ive been working for a company where a good chunk of the time I'm lifting furniture, or walking anywhere around 5-8 miles (according to my Fitbit). The one thing that is crucial for me to perform at work and in the weight room is recovery and fatigue management. This last year I've been putting a lot of effort on getting the most out of my recovery. The FIRST thing that is no secret but I feel doesn't get taken serious enough is SLEEP. Sleeping 7-8 hours every night is the sweet spot for me to feel at my best at work and training. SECOND is FOOD, are you eating enough? Last year I was dieting on really low calories which made work and training SO much harder than it had to be. I'm eating a lot more with the intent of gaining weight in order to improve performance and build more muscle. It's night and day difference what food can do when you're eating for performance instead of just how you look. THIRD is stress management (cortisol) . Too much stress can really take a hit on your recovery apart from a whole lot of other things like weight gain. Dealing with this I usually meditate first thing in the morning for 10 minutes and if I catch myself stressing over something like being stuck in traffic I take a deep breath and just think to myself how lucky I am for even having a body and mind that is capable of doing all these cool things. That usually calms me down and gets me in a good mood, so I guess you could say thinking about all the things you're thankful for. My thoughts for the day 🤷🏽♂️🏋🏽. Every (well most mornings) I get up and make Ryan a protein shake before he starts his long long day of intense physical labor. Anything I can to make it a tad easier I will! Today I had a little helper! (He's been up since 4 and will hopefully sleep soon 😯😯) It's sooo important giving your body what it needs!!
