Last year, I decided that I would cut my workload by almost half for 2017. Instead of booking my regular 30-33 weddings, I would shoot 18-20.
This was scary because I'm a single, self-employed hedgehog mama supporting myself.
But I finally became convinced that a "successful" business didn't mean much in the long run if my relationships weren't successful.
Something needed to change. I LOVED all of the incredible people I got to work with. (Some have become some of my dearest friends!) But it was me who was the problem… I was on the road all of the time, often working 60+ hours week.
I loved my job… But my personal life was burnt out. I couldn't look at a friend in the eye over coffee because I was too busy focusing on all I had to do. I never saw my family. I wasn't loving my church family like I was called to. I wasn't healthy. And I spent just over 1/2 of 2016 sleeping in my own bed.
So I made some drastic, uncomfortable changes that "didn't make sense" from a business standpoint.
It turned out -- ironically -- that this was one of the best business decisions I've ever made. It gave me time to "work on my business, and not just in it." Better yet, I can look people in the eyes on coffee dates now. I get to take my little brothers on trips to Disney World and be fully present. This week, as a friend/dad figure in my life is (apart from a miracle) spending his last days in the ICU, I was able to drive down to Nashville without skipping a heartbeat and have some of the most rich/deep times of my life. (Something I would have never been able to do last year.) And I am truly so excited about getting to love the brides + grooms I get to work with.
The main reason I'm sharing this is to give the person who feels like they can't do business + family + life well a permission slip to prioritize "people over profit." Things have a funny way of working out when you put first things first. ❤

Vil @harepusen og @louisehavlykke vise #widn (what I'm doing now)?
