Non-veganism is profoundly unjust because it means denying nonhuman animals of everything they are morally entitled to as sentient individuals. Denying them their inherent right not to be used as property, their right not to be controlled and treated like ‘things’. It is wrong to completely disregard their feelings and interests. To use someone without their permission is wrong, it’s exploitation. It’s abuse. Animals can not give us their consent, yet we still choose to control and manipulate every aspect of their lives. We control, exploit and abuse their bodies. We forcibly impregnate them. We take their babies from them, never to be seen again. To assume that animals are ok with this, that they are willing participants in their own objectification is absolutely ludicrous.
Eating and wearing what comes from animals inevitably results in injustice. It necessarily involves suffering, torture and killing. Either you live vegan or inflict unnecessary suffering and death on animals. You can’t seriously claim to care about animals and believe they matter morally when living as a non-vegan means they are as disposable to you as an old mobile phone or an old pair of slippers. In order to live as a non-vegan you’re accepting that animals don’t matter, that they have no more moral value than a pen or a chair. Animals are not things, they are nonhuman persons and living as a non-vegan means destroying everything important to them. Do the right thing.
