“The third time you die, you’re a little less worried but still scared. Et cetera, et cetera. I would say it takes a good 6 or 7 times of dying to not be too scared about it anymore. Every time before that, you just don’t know what’s going to happen. And it’s nerve-wracking indeed. But, every time you come to again, every life you find yourself living and every person you end up becoming in the next life…it all gives you a sense of appreciation for breathing and blood pumping and heart thumping and swallowing wine and clipping your toenails. It’s weird, but it’s true.”

I wrote this poem as I had many conversations with people about gender roles. I was surprised at the response that I received on views that I held about women. Intellectually it is easy to accept a concept however in practice, it can challenge the core of our beliefs.
Growing up, I struggled with gender roles that were assigned to me. It took a while to find courage to break the mould.
I feel like though we’ve come a long way in changing this gender stereotyping, there is much more in the subtlety of this transition that needs to evolve. I write about it as passionately as I live by it. I write to empower people to have the courage to live their truth.
