The business of watch collecting is largely based around having an extensive knowledge of condition and originality, with many newcomers getting burnt by incorrect watches. One face that has been at the centre of guiding the community as to what truly original vs. refinished condition looks like, is Eric Wind. After starting his horological career with @Hodinkee, he moved to the auction world as a senior specialist for @christieswatches ; a position he held until very recently deciding to go it alone with his own watch-dealing business. We met up with Eric in Geneva, during the winter auction season, to have a chat about how he found himself in the watch industry. Link in the bio.
Vintage Universal Polerouter automatic watch with a genuine leather strap. The Polerouter watch was produced by Universal in 1954 and was originally designed by Gerald Genta for the first trans-Atlantic flight over the North Pole. This Polerouter is a fantastic Universal Geneve watch with a very rich historical relevance. #polerouter#universalwatches#bahrain#vintage#geraldgenta#watches
Rarely has a show-off looked cuter. At the SAS✈ museum the other day, with a wonderful collection of vintage posters and some way-passed-retirement-age pilots, who gave out coffee for free ☕. Of course there was much bragging about how SAS was the first carrier to fly over the pole for their intercontinental 🌎 trips (rightly so). And of course I had high hopes to see a Polarouter ⌚ there, maybe even some of the pre-Pola-/Polerouter Universal Geneve pieces, which the SAS pilots used on their first trip (LA to Copenhagen with the "Arild Viking" in 28h and 2 stops) . No luck though, there were just some gold, cheap looking SAS merch watches 🤓
📚 some fun fact for the ignorant ⌚ community: We tend to think the Polarouter's antimagnetic features made those flights possible. Nope! The non-magnetic gyrocompass by Bendix Aviation Corp was the wondertool, because a regular compass would have pointed South even 1000 km before you hit the pole. No GPS back then 🐒.
