Science is filled with failure. Perseverance is one of the greatest traits one can have as a scientist. Failure can definitely be discouraging but it can also be a great motivator to keep on pushing forward! If I had a dollar for every failed experiment, I'd be writing this post from my yacht in the Maldives 😁 .
A great example of this is the revolutionary discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming. In case you don't know the story, he was a researcher at St. Mary's hospital investigating antibacterial substances. However, he was known for having an untidy lab. One august before going on vacation he left his Petri dishes stacked on the bench instead of the incubator and came back to find one dish contaminated. Generally speaking, people would think they mucked up their experiment. However, on closer observation he realized that the mold on the plate had killed off bacteria in close proximity. Based on this observation, he grew the mold and discovered penicillin being produced. He continued to find anti bacterial properties and published a paper on it. However, this immediate discovery led to years of trials and difficulties of isolating and mass producing penicillin until the 1940s.
Although Alexander Fleming's discovery could have been thought of as a failed experiment, penicillin was born and has revoluntioned antibiotic treatment saving countless lives! .
Remember, it's all about perspective! We all fail at some point BUT failure is necessary to grow. It is a natural part of the process in science and life! .
