We believe that #heritagewalks are successful and relevant if they create a bridge between the visitors and the local #community . This is why we encourage direct community #engagements during the walks, wherever possible. Wherever direct engagement is not possible, our long research lead-up for each and every walk includes connecting with and speaking to the locals along our routes. This local knowledge is something that enriches our narrative, and us as a research-led company. Similarly, the communities also feel included, and not merely objectified by us, and the visitors, reinforcing a sense of ownership for our shared heritage!

This is Dr Ndukuyakhe Ndlovu, Senior Lecturer in the department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Pretoria, among other responsibilities such as co-editing the South African Archaeological Bulletin. Dr Ndlovu has two main concerns in his research, southern African Rock Art and heritage management, in which he has a deep history. This archaeologist graciously agreed to speak as a guest at PACS's Archaeology Open Day for schools 2017.
Hundreds of people walk past this impressive set of bedrock mortars at the Arizona Historical Society Museum near the University of Arizona campus every day. The boulder was hauled here decades ago from Ajo, Arizona. Imagine that the piles of landscaping gravel in the depressions are mesquite pods for an idea of how the mortars might have looked when they were being used.
You can go look at the mortars 24 hours a day at 949 E. 2nd Street (west of Park) in Tucson. Photo by RJ Sliva and Homer Thiel. #archaeology#publicarchaeology#mortars#groundstone#tucson#tucsonarchaeology
