One common topic that's come up in conversation for me recently is a coaches application to their own advice.

Training people. Training classes and then training yourself can be a little overwhelming at times, and sometimes wanting to be an example to those around you over emphasises the pressure to work hard in the gym causing times to "sometimes" feel a little harder than others. 
Being an example in effort I feel is a great trait to try and uphold, but also to the everyday person, being an example in rest, recovery and in balance is way more empowering than we may think. 
As a trainer, if you look in the mirror & said to yourself what you hear from the occasional run down client, what would you respond with? Would you suggest some down time to recoup and remain in the longer game, reminding them of the positives, or would you tell them to just get on with it? Quite often what I hear myself do and a few other trainers I have been fortunate enough to meet is most of the time the latter. 
I'm half way through two weeks of relaxed training. Way less volume. Less intensity. Weirder movements. Things I often neglect. Sometimes it isn't a matter of just doing nothing for 2 weeks. Sometimes it isn't just a matter of "getting on with it". It's simply taking a little side path of getting moving & resetting not only body but mind. 
I see members at times getting overwhelmed and run down with a lot of self inflicted pressure. With a competitive class environment, a whiteboard of results it's ok to take the pressure off every now and again if needed. Remember why we started, and remember where your true goals lie. We're here to be fitter, healthier & positively functioning. 
If your feeling a little beat up. Your feeling a little more irritable than other times. Get out the pen and paper, ask yourself if your being 100% helpful. It's ok to reset & recover every now and again!

Physical scientific structure & implementation of consistent progressions are a must in improving ones physical capability; regardless of ability or goal.

Understanding the mechanics and ideology behind certain movements, energy systems & phases of training are also key in physical longevity and improving ones physical capability/wellbeing.

One thing I feel that is so commonly overlooked in the pursuit to get better as a coach is so simplistic, yet delicately complex. That is the art of understating personality.

We can all have the formula, the blueprint, the facility to creating "success", but each client perceives coaching energy & direction differently. From the person who loves a shouting at, to the person who likes a quick pointer between sets out of sight of anyone. 
Being able to read these needs between clients and then apply not only the correct level of suggested improvement but also doing it on a level that is most effective is where the difficulty lies.

It is a skill that takes years of exposure too, a skill that seems so simple in application, but a skill that when mastered is an incredible tool to add to the arsenal of your coaching. 
If you are like me, you may find yourself double checking your class engagement sentences once you've addressed the class and start replaying them over in your head to make sure they made sense. Next time, if this occurs, ask yourself if you can cater for all personality types with your direction. Both when speaking to the class as a whole or individuals.

His positioning/ mechanics has allowed for a huge increase in strength. He has stepped away from the belt to stabilise a very strong "one side" of the lumbar, and this is demonstrated in a pretty comfortable 235lb Hang Clean PR.

For me training isn't just a means of keeping healthy physically, it allows me to find some form of middle ground mentally too.
