I came out 15 years ago, and have been a Comedian for almost as long as I've been an OUT, PROUD, LOUD Queer. When I was starting a lot of men in comedy communities thanked me for "Not talking about being a chick" and "Not talking about being gay too much".... That was my "Ah-ha" moment, I've been a furious, dedicated, unstoppable ally for female identifying and lgbtq people ever since. Our stories are SO important and also... our voices are SO strong! That's why I present to you, "The Up and Comers " an LGBTQ Comedy Showcase of ALL fresh faced Gaybies, who are the future of Comedy in Canada. Today the spotlight is on Shawna Edward 1 of my 10 Comics featured this Tuesday, November 21st at @rivoli_to - 9PM
I saw Shawna perform for the first time just this last week... and I was legit BLOWN AWAY, I'm so happy with how the scene and the world has progressed, seeing such a young, confident, amazing comic, who was SO NEW able to speak about their personal experiences with such honesty and pride made me so proud, and made me SO HAPPY to be able to be apart of her journey in Comedy, and Queerness!!! #TheUpandComers is THIS TUESDAY, November 21st/9PM @rivoli_to, and I couldn't be more thrilled with the line-up and THIS SHOW!!! I've been SO happy to Produce and put the work in to make such an IMPORTANT evening happen!! The purpose? To promote fresh faced up and coming Queer Comics, and to make their journey in Comedy easier, by creating opportunities for them, that def did not exist for myself and the Queer Comics that came before them or me.
There are TEN acts on the inaugural Up & Comers line-up, but today we feature just ONE!! I'm thrilled today is all about THIS LADY RIGHT HERE!!! Colleen Sibeon is one of the new faces in comedy I've been the most stoked on, and I support and love this woman WHOLE HEARTEDLY!!! "Colleen is thrilled to be doing QAPD and she would like to thank Chantel for this and many other opportunities! Colleen completed levels 1 and 2 of Comedy Girl at Comedy Bar and has been fortunate enough do shows around Toronto like: Church Street Comedy, Dawn Patrol, Spirits Comedy, Cameron House Comedy, Mega Crazy Crazy Frenzy, Winprov and more!" This will be ONE of the MANY Queer comedy shows Colleen has been featured on, but this Tuesday is especially exciting because her #QueerandPresentDanger compilation Album IS DROPPING THIS TUESDAY!!! Grab your copy on iTunes & Spotify!!! Tickets: 15$ Advance/20$ Door - eventbrite.ca
Ooo, were you too busy to see me doing stand up last week?
Then don't miss these ones:
Comedy Basement Thursday Nov 16th, 9pm @ Goldie's
Magic Mic Tuesday Nov 21st, 8pm @ The Junction
Foxhole Comedy Wednesday Nov 22nd, 9pm @ Fox Cabaret
We just wrote a little something new that we are very excited to film in the upcoming months! This isn’t it! These are stills from a stupid video @jngaio filmed yesterday and uploaded to our Facebook page! It is horrible!
November 21 at the @rivoli_to ... there aren't many tickets left, and if you buy through this link you make me look popular! I'm really excited about this show, and each one I do I learn and grow and get more comfortable. This lineup is going to be wonderful and hilarious, but more importantly they're all comics just trying to do their art. It's a beautiful and inspiring thing to be a part of, and if you tickets from this link below you get them for cheaper than at the door, you solidify a spot at the club, and I'll send you a candid shot of my adorable cats in slumber. I'm not joking.
Meet me! I’m Valerie, your Lousy Human in chief and I’m also on Comedy on the Table tonight at @velvetloungedc at 7pm in case that wasn’t clear. I may have picked @casaruby as the organization to benefit tonight, but I am a Lousy Human because I ate cookie dough for lunch. I’m 33 years old. 📸 by @andrearodway
Meet Maria Sanchez. You can see her on tonight’s edition of Comedy on the Table at the Velvet Lounge. She’s a Lousy Human because she ate a bacon double cheese burger with an egg while watching What the Health.
This dude asked to take a selfie with me after the show and then I was like, my turn! I can't believe I got him to do a kissy face with me. What a good sport!! Ah the youth! .
I met Liz Green ages ago at the Berkeley Poetry Slam and since then she's been one of my favs. It's always been an honor to do poetry or comedy with her. THANK YOU so much Liz!! For bringing us to Los Medanos College to do comedy for the students they were all fantastic!! What a great crowd. .
Meet Charity Sadé. She is one of the hilarious performers on the 11/10 edition of Comedy on the Table at The Velvet Lounge. (7pm! $8!) She is a Lousy Human because she will watch tourists struggle with the Metro map for a solid 3 minutes before she helps them with directions. It is a little payback for standing on the wrong side of the escalator.
Meet Gigi Modrich. I mean, you may have already because she hosted the inaugural Pussy Galore Tour show in May. 😉 Now you can see her on the Friday 11/10 edition of Comedy on the Table at the Velvet Lounge. (7pm! $8!) She’s a Lousy Human because rather than buy umbrellas, she goes to hotel lost & founds on rainy days and asks if anyone has turned in a black umbrella. Someone always has...
"Why did I lie and say that I had Gonorrhea?! What did I think? That the people of Howard Brown would look at my records, see that I've been treated for both Gonorrhea AND Syphilis and say, "Well at least they're meeting new people...""
Aaaaggghhhh!!!! It's happening! It only took us two years but we finally got Jan Derbyshire on the show! She is in town briefly so we couldn't help but snatch her up.
Jan toured as a stand-up comedian with Yuk Yuk's and Punchlines back in the day and has appeared on A&E's Funny Girls and CBC television and radio. She is an award-winning playwright and writes funny sad scripts. The short film Stall will shoot in the spring and Bad Knife Habits is in development with Maple Marie Productions. Jan works out her activism muscles developing strategies for diversity and inclusion for big grown up people and companies and, in her spare time, guides other people towards funneling rage into funny sh*t.
Don't miss Jan as part of The Lady Show on Wednesday, November 8th, 8 pm at the Red Gate Revue Stage on Granville Island!
