Here lies Rati Udre Udre, holder of the dubious record as the greatest cannibal ever. Before his death in 1847 in Rakiraki he was said to have consumed up to 900 men, flesh his primary food group. His kitchen was the coastal mangroves in Ra where his upcoming courses, mainly outlaws, were held prisoner until their death. He ate them to bring respect and protection to his village. His enemies slain in battle were consumed so he could imbibe their power. When his homes were built, a human was held in each of the four corner poles to afford him spiritual protection.
Christianity descended on Fiji in 1835. One of the first missionaries, the Rev. Thomas Baker initially had a good relationship with the chief. One day the chief noticed the Rev combing his hair and wanted to try it. The comb stuck in his hair and as the reverend reached to extricate it, he touched the chief's hair. This was a taboo punishable by death and the man of God was duly dispatched by the chief's warriors. His shoes were cooked in a pot and his body was shared between the four local villages.
It is said, even to me today in hushed tones laden with the fear of both superstition and a vengeful god, that all who ate the late reverend were plagued with disease and disability for generations to come. In 2003 the Fijian government invited his descendants back to Fiji to formally apologise and return his bones, their gracious acknowledgement removing the curse.
It is an interesting meditation on the nature of power and how it is wielded. It remains remarkable to me how missionaries shifted a tribal society with a deep connection to nature through the worship of many gods - in Ra, snake gods and dog gods particularly - to a religion built on the fear of a baneful god.
In Fiji religion is a prolific influence, whether Christian, Hindu or Muslim. Each respects beliefs different from their own. The entire island chain joyfully embraced Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, with fireworks, sweets and Indian garb just a few days ago. Here there is no one true God. In its place is a highly personalised connection to the divine - religion's ultimate holy grail - and it is just beautiful to be immersed in.

Two days ago I started to have joint pain in my right arm. I was hoping I wouldn't have a flare up. Well I did! I still pushed myself to train legs on Wednesday & lifted heavy as f***. I missed work on Thursday because I was in so much pain. It felt like my elbow was locked. This is why I take all my workouts to the next level and push myself beyond my limits. I don't know when I'm going to have a flare-up. When it happens it happens and it's out of my control. I'm blessed to still be able to do what I love. I love to lift weights and I'll never stop. I don't want your sympathy. I'm hoping to motivate someone. Even if your faced with obstacles, you can still reach your goals. You need to push yourself. Be proud of yourself💜. Happy flex Friday 💪🏼💪🏼. Be proud of your progress.
