What makes this country great is the freedoms we have. Brave men and women have fought and died so that we have our first amendment rights. This means the right to act in such a way that may be counter cultural. Rosa Parks was a perfect example. We celebrate and applaud her bravery. Our country was founded on the courage of some men who had a vision of freedom and chose to act. Have we come so far away from roots?
Lately I am seeing so many IG and FB posts wanting to shame and boycott NFL players and others who choose to express their opinion by not standing for the National Anthem. Then those that decide to stand are celebrated as heroes. Each side, each post feels divisive and the bantering comments from those who passionately debate one side or another, even more so. My point is not to get into a debate here and this is not a political post representing one side or another. I simply wanted to write a post as a reminder to myself of my gratitude for the freedoms we have in America.
Whether I agree or disagree with the act of standing or not when our National Anthem is played is not nearly as important as celebrating the right and freedom to do either. As a country we are stronger because of our diversity. We are stronger when we respect each other's varying opinions. We are stronger when we remember our foundation. We are weak when we tear each other down over a differing opinion. We are weak when we demand another to think or believe or act the way we think they should based on our own comfort zone. We are weak when we chose not to seek to understand another's point of view and instead berate them because they are expressing simply a different opinion from our own.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Every morning I wake up, kiss my wife and son, make a cup of coffee and put my Flag outside! Why? Because being adopted I am extremely grateful for all the opportunity this country has giving me! I hated Obama being president and not once did I shit on my country or flag! This country is a simple one to live in and enjoy why must we complicate it. You NFL guys who protest have no clue! Cuz everything was a free ride for you! I feel bad and hope you open your eyes and educate your self! Thanks to all the men and women who have died for that flag and giving me the chance to kiss my family and fly my flag! #america#americanflag#redwhiteandblue#americathebeautiful#godfamilycountry#howido
The truth of the matter is, their "This is why we stand" and our "This is why we kneel" is EXACTLY the same. Don't let dogwhistles and rhetoric cause us to lose sight about what is important here.
Where there is injustice, there is pain. Where there is pain, there is unrest. Where there is unrest, there is the need to make right what has caused harm. So healing can occur. So inflammation can be cooled. So justice can be served. Honor and justice are not at war with each other. We should honor those to whom it is due and we should fight for justice alongside those who do not receive it.
When the symbol of what you stand for becomes more important to you than what it actually represents, that's not just hypocrisy, it's idolatry.
You may choose to stand for honor or kneel for justice. But make no mistake, it is better to kneel for a cause than to bow to an idol.
"The strangely still pause between summer and autumn, greenery and gold, and the heat and the rising wind that is once again readying itself to rush it all away in a climactic symphony of color and sent is - in my opinion one of the best parts of living on earth." Victoria Erickson .

This right here is why it pisses me off so much when I see someone not standing for the National Anthem and the flying on the colors. There are men and women that are covered in these colors when they die because they took an oath to serve and protect this country. And family members that were handed these folded colors because their loved one was off away from family when they died because they took that oath. So stand the hell up and think about these men and women that are not able to anymore!! Find some other way to protest!! I will not watch another NFL game till every one of those players are standing!
Last night was a blast. We had so much fun hanging with everyone. #redwhiteandblue#younglife All the pictures from last night are on our Facebook page @wwsyounglife **********************************
