A German woman had to be the one to step up and would not be intimidated by the Muslim men surrounding her. Where are your men, Germany? Are they too scared to do what this woman did? Rise up, Germany.
Save the Children reported that 130 Yemeni children are now dying every day from extreme hunger or disease, with 50,000 dead this year alone. Meanwhile, the cholera epidemic, triggered by a combination of the war’s crippling of water sanitation systems and the Hadi government’s decision to block payments to all waste, sewage and health workers in Houthi-controlled areas - became the biggest in recorded history last month, with almost 900,000 infected by the disease. The previous biggest epidemic, still underway in Haiti, took seven years to reach 800,000 cases. Yemen surpassed that number in just six months. Khadija Barati and her daughters came to the U.S. in 2014 to escape mounting danger in their native Afghanistan. The nurturing environment they found at Decatur’s Global Village Project, a refugee school for girls, has allowed Khaty and Farzana to blossom. “Here, girls have freedom.”

The fighting in Syria has robbed hundreds of thousands of children of their education.
Our motto is ‘education is a great equaliser’ plays a fundamental role in the way we view the work we do.
While giving aid to communities helps the problem short term, ultimately it is the skills and psychological support in the long term that allows these communities to be uplifted out of their situation.

A detainee image from yesterday inside Manus Island RPC. The 111th day of peaceful protests. Around 400 men remain inside with food, water & medical support cut off, refusing to leave until they are granted safety & freedom.
Everything that was wrong with the government's callous & inept mishandling of this situation since the very beginning in 2013 has inevitably led us here to this crisis. It's not only morally wrong but it has been so unnecessary.
One phone call by the PM to NZ Prime Minister @jacindaardern to accept their offer to take 150 men would at least be the start of sense prevailing. The Govt has inexplicably resisted this but NZ is determined to step up where Australia has failed. 🙏🏽

France will be the first to welcome African migrants evacuated from Libya to Niger by the United Nations refugee agency, French officials announced Monday.
After experiencing appalling living conditions at camps in the north African country, the refugees were taken to Niger on 11 November by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), where they have been looked after.
The 25 Eritreans, Ethiopians and Sudanese – including 15 women and four children – should reach France “at the latest in January,” the interior ministry said.

Camini: The small village with a big heart!

Villages in Italy have been losing their populations to larger cities and to emigration since WWII. Camini, one such village, in the southern region of Calabria, has seen its population shrink from 1200 to 250. Meanwhile, in 2016 almost 200,000 refugees arrived in Italy from #Nigeria#Libya#Mali#Ghana#Pakistan#Iraq#Niger#Gambia#Senegal#Sudan and #Ethiopia . In hope of breathing new life into its village, residents of Camini have welcomed more than 80 refugees. Refugees have found a second home in Camini. Several refugees along with natives of Camini are restoring abandoned buildings in order to provide apartments for arriving refugees. Single refugees live with Italian families.
Through the #nonprofit Jungi Mundu (@rosariozurzolo) refugees are finding job training working as assistants and apprentices alongside skilled workers who have lived in Camini their whole lives. Italian language, art, culinary and photography classes are among the activities available for adults and children.

Back in 2013, I got the chance to visit #Israel and visited a Palestinian Refugee Camp called Ibdaa Cultural Center. They serve more than 1,200 children and youth annually and provide employment and income for more than 70 families in the refugee camp.

Their mission is to "create a positive atmosphere for children and youth in the refugee camp to assist them in developing competence, creativity and leadership skills through a range of social, cultural and educational activities. They strive to empower children and instill the confidence and discipline necessary for them to overcome the obstacles of their difficult conditions while simultaneously educating the international community about the Palestinian refugee issue."
