At the beginning of the year we made the last minute (and somewhat difficult) decision to remove Issa from the Montessori school he was in. There were so many ongoing issues with the school itself (NOT the method) and he very clearly communicated that wasn't happy there. I realized that while they had all the right materials, they lacked the true spirit and heart of what really lies at the core of a Montessori community and establishment. We don't have many options where we live as far as alternative education programs go, so it was hard for me to make the decision to walk away, especially since we have been a Montessori-from-birth family and I had always envisioned my children attending Montessori schools. We enrolled him in a local Reggio program and he has been thriving. While it's not Montessori, there are several elements that are similar. He is happy, which puts me at ease, and his teacher has nothing but wonderful things to say about him. So we will continue our Montessori journey at home while he attends a Reggio program, part-time.
Yesterday, while picking him up, his teacher reminded him "don't forget to do your homework, Issa!" For a split second I had an internal cringe...homework?! We were to go on a nature walk and select something to make a nature slide with to contribute to the classroom. Definitely our type of homework. So after school, Issa hopped on his scooter (purple gloves to match...even though it was a particularly warm day) and we headed along our favourite route, to his favorite house with towering sunflowers. 🌻 We took the opportunity to talk about the different parts of the flower and seed formation as we head into the fall/winter. I feel like this is just the beginning of a great year for him.
