💛💛#regram @obsessee: 💛💛 ------------------------------- Happy Sunday! Today caps off an incredible few weeks—I’m a few days away from finishing my final degree here in Toronto, our documentary @straightcurvefilm has premiered, and in between flying to New York, writing exams, and giving my dissertation here at home, I was asked to speak at @thedy.nasty about my struggles with body image and the things I’ve experienced as a model. A few years ago, I would have used the above as an excuse to say no, secretly concealing the real reason I didn’t feel comfortable standing in front of people—I didn’t love myself. Today, I want to take you behind the *real* ways we can crush our fears, share our stories, and love ourselves more, in public speaking and beyond.
• Take up SPACE. If anything, it’s imposter syndrome that can consume us in these moments. The key is found in realizing that nobody knows everything. When we speak, we’re there to give a personality to our subject; to make a story, topic or point of view come alive. People are listening to YOU, not just a static set of data. So yes, come prepared, but own your unique way of doing things.
• Connect! Think of your listeners not as an audience, but as a community. This shift of perspective really helps me join in with the people I’m speaking with, and try to feel what they’re feeling. We’re not in this alone.
• Assess your attitude. I used to stutter quite a bit, and I still do—I’m generally quite embarrassed to have all of the attention on me, so I will sometimes speak really fast as a subconscious apology for “wasting” somebody’s time. Friends, no. We are here on this planet for a reason, and sharing your perspectives with clarity, passion, and confidence is powerful. We might just help someone else feel seen.
Each of us comes to the table with our own assets, stories, and strengths. You have a superpower nobody else can duplicate, because nobody else has lived your life. Embrace this—you should never feel ashamed to own your own voice. Sending so many beautiful summer vibes your way. If you need me, I’ll be dancing to the Lorde album until next time. Head to our Instagram Stories for more. — @schillian
