🎬【#CineFan 】 Jacques Rivette: LOVE ON THE GROUND
This overlooked jewel from Jacques Rivette is a beguiling mystery about the riddles of love and art. Jane Birkin and Geraldine Chaplin star as actresses recruited by an enigmatic playwright to star in a new work that will take place in his labyrinthine mansion. But as life imitates art and vice versa, the two women find themselves drawn into a bizarre love quadrangle. Acting, magic and life are blended into an ecstatic stew in one of the director's most emotionally complex films. .
In the post-screening talk of OUT 1 on 30 Apr, critic Kiki Fung said Rivette was subversive in his "play", defeating any expectation of traditional film in its length, narrative structure, acting, cinematographic style and even the ending. In his "reconstruction of the politics of filmmaking", he enabled the audience to contemplate the faded hopes of a whole generation. .
The Beautiful Troublemaker (La Belle Noiseuse, Jacques Rivette, 1991)
A reclusive famous painter, Frenhofer (Piccoli), lives quietly with his wife and former model (Birkin) in a rambling château in rural Languedoc-Roussillon. When a young artist visits him with his girlfriend, Marianne (Béart), Frenhofer is inspired to commence work once more on a painting he long ago abandoned — La Belle Noiseuse — using Marianne as his model. The film painstakingly explores Frenhofer’s creative rebirth. It uses lengthy real-time takes of the artist’s hand (provided by Bernard Dufour) working on paper and canvas. Jacques Rivette with Julie Berto and Dominique Labourier on the set of Céline et Julie vont on bateau. The first of my summer film choices.
A woman sits in a park reading a book on magic. She draws a symbol in the sand and casts a spell. Suddenly, another woman appears, hurrying and dropping various items and accessories as she hurries across Paris while the first woman follows in pursuit gathering them up. Has she been conjured up or is it a kind of game between two friends?
It's a film that baffles as much as it reveals as we accompany them on their various adventures and eccentricities. At the heart of it is a kind of theatrical piece, played out in an abandoned house and based on a Henry James story of all things. We piece together the mystery thanks to these special sweets the women consume (just what do they contain?!) which allow us and them to see these non-stop cinema screenings of the strange events inside. It's a film about the relationship between film making and the audience but also about female friendship. Each woman needs the other to free themselves of childish affections from the past and misguided ambition (I'm thinking of the magic tricks and the ridiculous fiancé).
Aller en bateau can also mean to lose yourself in a story and you certainly get caught up on this dreamlike one over 3 hours. It's not a film for everyone, some might find it irritating and it does require a certain amount of patience to get into it but there's nothing else quite like it. I consider it a firm favourite and look forward to revisiting it on a hot summer afternoon each year #film#cinema#french#rivette#classic#cinephile#filmbuff#filmreview#blackandwhite#igdaily#summer#seventies#cool#newwave

Four acting students study under the enigmatic theatre master in her much sought after, women-only class. A mysterious man begins to approach each lady under different pretenses. In GANG OF FOUR, #Rivette muses on the dubious interstices between acting and ‘real life’, where the truth may lie in reality or the stage, or in between.
