They call this place The Bund. Across the river is a nice view of the skyscrapers. The pink one on the left was once the tallest skyscraper in all of China. Behind us there were so many gorgeous gothic buildings. It almost felt European. I didn’t know this at the time, but apparently Shanghai has one of the richest collections of Art Deco architectures in the world in this exact spot. Kind of wild, especially now when I think back on how impromptu our trek here was. We left the airport at 4am and had to turn right back around when we realized we couldn’t communicate with anyone or get a taxi 😅. So we sat in a coffee shop trying to figure out the metro and where we go on a short schedule. The Bund was by the water and we figured, why not? I don’t fully remember how long we walked to get here but by the time we took off our backpacks, it felt like someone had beat the shit out of us. We sat down, took pictures with total strangers, and watched the cargo ships go by for a while. And believe it or not, it wasn’t really an overcast day. The sun was out and it was beautiful out. It’s just the smog that makes pretty much every picture look overcast. 😷 We inadvertently caught a gem here.
We had 13 hours to see as much of Shanghai as we could which, for us, meant exploring on foot so we could see EVERYTHING. Initially, when we walked through the alleyway that lead us here, we thought we were walking into a market but instead found ourselves on a private block of apartments. I thought maybe we should turn back, we didn’t want to be invasive, but every alley felt like an invitation to explore so we continued on. As we approached the woman in pink, we cautiously smiled at her and to our surprise, she smiled warmly back at us. The Chinese can be hard people to read, so this moment felt really good. 😊
Song for you! This one’s a bit out of left field, basically a bossa nova about a hostage crisis. Can’t imagine why it didn’t go top 40…😎 If you like it and want to hear the whole thing, just go to radionowhere.bandcamp.com
This King Parrot and his mate decided that they wanted some new friends. Super curious even checking out what camera gear was in our backpacks. Unreal moment, with one of them jumping on my head as I was taking this shot!! ✌🤣

Last night the wind blew so hard I thought the van might roll over in a big gust. Tala dog was whining to get in bed all night, and I just couldn't seem to turn my brain off and fall back asleep every time a big gust shook the van.
At about 3:30 in the morning, it started pounding rain. Cade jumped out of bed and immediately started turning on lights and swiveling the driver's seat around. He had already been worrying about the huge ruts on the dirt road we were camped on, and the thought of getting stuck in the mud was too much--we would have to move camp.
Today I'm getting on a plane to go meet up with my family and watch my mom give a big important talk because she's a pretty big deal in the nutrition world--and I estimate that I got a grand total of about 16 minutes of sleep last night.
Moral of the story: I apologize to whoever is sitting in seat 37E on my flight. I'll try my best not to snore and drool all over your shoulder all the way there. Also I haven't showered in a few days. 😬🤤😴
