Conceptual piece for my show. Currently on display at Wheaton College. This is modeled after a cockfighting Gaff which is attached to a roosters spur in cockfighting: a weaponized enhancement. Roosters are birds of beauty and bravery and at the same time frail and disposable to their masters/owners.
I'm making these rooster pieces as a way of thinking through my ritual of retail consumption: a means to achieving a certain social status. I'm placing this squarely in a generational-specific setting of hip-hop and sneaker culture to hopefully start some kind of conversation about masculinity, social hierarchy, and conditioned power.
I see these pieces as first addressing my own identity within my experience, and second, as both a critique and celebration of the community that shaped my idea of masculinity.
Its uncommon to find a cluster of hens without a rooster. I love that they keep an eye out on their girls. For those that have been here awhile, this is the rooster that our hen hatched out this spring.
Issued as Australian legal tender, the coin’s reverse features a rooster, a hen, and three chicks standing amongst bamboo foliage and flowers. The design also incorporates the Chinese character for ‘rooster’, the inscription ‘Year of the Rooster’, and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017 year-date and the monetary denomination are shown on the obverse of each coin. #silver#coin#rooster#chicks#chicken#ainsliebullionproducts
