Hikes aren't my favorite thing, but there are a lot of things I'd do for Kim Allred that I wouldn't do for anyone else in the world. . . also, admittedly, I actually had a really good time. Probably because I had good company. I love you guys! #weekend#saltlakecity#utah#bloodlake#cottonwoodcanyon
There are few things better than seeing my jewelry in action! Thank you @nailsbylorilane for sporting my Clip and Endless Hoop in your beautiful ear! I love seeing a Clip in an upper piercing. So good!
NIGGER. That's what she called me. Last night. In Salt Lake City. Screamed at the top of her lungs. Multiple times. This, 3 days after ASSURING a friend (who'd been warned of the racism here) that she had heard it wrong. The Salt Lake I'd inhabited for the last 14 years was a peaceful, kind & safe place. I was excited to show her this great city and for her to experience, first hand, this place that I've often referred to as the "Palm of God." Last night, my soul endured a dent.
Interestingly enough, it seemed the angry lady driver thought she was protecting another white person at the wheel from me. One she assumed I had cut off on the road. I find myself curious. Since clearly, yelling NIGGER, puts her squarely in the category of racist.... 1. If she knew we were friends, on our way to the same destination and simply switching lanes would she have lashed out like this? 2. If she knew the woman in the car was my beloved Muslim friend would she have "stood up for her" just the same? 3. How would I have I been portrayed in the media if I had crossed the lanes between us (that she let buffer her loud, ignorant, cowardice) and confronted her face to face?
Years ago it became clear to me that everyone has a role to play in our great American, if not global, story of change and progress. Whether one changes things through protest, politics, music, medicine or loving arms & words that soothes broken hearts and inspires the next step in our evolution there is a role for us all. After serving in the military for the freedoms we all enjoy (even this woman) and spending many years healing physical and emotional trauma as a result of that service, I KNEW my days of "fighting" were over. I've committed my life to being resilient & joyful, inspiring change through humor and play. On a day like today, in a week like this week, in a time like this....I cry. I let the hot tears of anger and frustration wet my face. Deep breaths soothe me. The sound of my mother telling me, "you are the child of a king" remind me that I am loved. I believe we are all extraordinary beings. At times, we forget our greatness. But as any eve of a triumphant moment, we remember. We rise.
Great Salt Lake. Salt Lake City has been full of surprises, including our unanimous favorite dinner thus far on this trip. But today we have a solid 8 hours of driving ahead of us, crossing into the Pacific time zone, through Nevada, and stopping just inside our new home state of California. It's a beautiful day for a road trip.

I've always said that Utah is one of my top 2 favorite places I've ever lived (even above Colorado and Hawaii). I was a bit surprised when I realized how MUCH I loved it. I was blown away when we were driving through Little Cottonwood Canyon and remembering just how majestic it is. These pictures do not do it justice. It almost looked fake it was so beautiful. We hiked up to Donut Falls yesterday and got to see a moose about 15 feet from the trail. 😳 Swipe ⬅️ for more pics! #saltlakecity#hikingadventures#marinasadventuresinslc
