"Tenchu (天誅), or divine punishment, was a battle cry by imperial loyalists of the bakumatsu and often used as a death sentence for those that favored opening the county to foreign powers. Tenchu assassins terrorized the towns of Kyoto assassinating many of the shogunate's advisors and its sympathizers. They would assassinate at night slicing the head from the victim's body and post it on a stake by sunrise, usually by a river with a heavily trafficked bridge, with a wooden sign board reading the victim's crimes and finally a verdict of "divine punishment." One report of the assassination of Meakashi Bunkichi states that his strangled corpse was found tied to wooden pilings, naked, swollen red legs from dried blood, bamboo stakes driven through his penis and anus, and completely exposed for the world to see. He was unfortunately spared the initial beheading because, "cutting an animal like him would defile our swords." Other stories of victims having their ears or arms cut off and delivered to advisor's and their daimyo's doorsteps as an act of intimidation was not uncommon. The tenchu terror lasted from the summer of 1862 until the fall of 1863.

"This samurai waits to hear his punishment for whatever crime was committed (reenactment I'm sure). As a samurai, it could be death by seppuku, banishment to an island, or confiscation of land. Non-samurai would often be put to death by boiling, crucifixion, burning, decapitation, or sawing. Less serious crimes one would be banished, exiled, imprisoned, tattooed, physical labor, house arrest, flagellation, or confiscation of business or property. Women were often sent to work in the red light district.

Sato Masakiyo on a tiger🐯 hunt in Korea, 1860. Artist 🖌- Kunitsuna II (1829 - 1874)💕👍.⠀
⠀⠀
⠀Fantastic depiction of one of Sato Masakiyo's tiger hunts in Korea. Masakiyo (the real-life Kato Kiyomasa) was one of the three senior commanders during the Seven-Year War with Korea, and had the opportunity to hunt the beasts while there. In this encounter, Masakiyo boldly thrusts his spear at the animal's chest as it snarls and bears its fangs, looking up with bulging eyes. He wears a red vest patterned with his circular crest over his armor, and a horned battle helmet, balancing atop at rocky outcropping as he attacks the tiger🐯. A waterfall rushes through the center of the scene, framed by snow-covered bamboo and pines🌲. Incredible detail in the tiger's striped fur. A great illustration from this famous tale. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.⠀

Triptych. Part 1.⠀
⠀
