[TL;DR: Here's what I got for my first competitive painting efforts @ NOVA Open - I actually think the pins look nicer than the medals, TBH 😉) - For a detailed breakdown and description of the entire convention, check out the NOVA Open post on my "Spectre Elite Gaming Studio" FaceBook Page.] I ended up walking away with some level of recognition for all of the entries I put into the #capitalpalette @ the #novaopen . I got a silver for Porphyrion Rex, a bronze for my Malifaux Freakshow crew and my Kingdom Death single was able to make it into the Finalists despite extreme competition from over 95 entries in the single miniature category (monstrous creatures were included in "Single Miniature" for some reason and I saw at least 10 miniatures that were strictly better than mine). I was hoping for a gold for Rex, silver for Freakshow and a bronze for the Kingdom Death dude so I wasn't too far off of my goal - the judges were stricter on technique, the field was more competitive and I had a lot of inexperience in what I thought was important/unimportant when it comes to competition painting. For example, I didn't consider size and display space when I brought Rex so he occupied the absolute worst spot with the poorest lighting for the entire convention because there was nowhere else to put him. It's my fault for bringing a 15" model but at the same time, I would never limit my idea or vision for a model just for it to be able to fit in a particular cabinet, anyway - so these be the harsh realities. Another example is that I underestimated the affinity people had for atmospheric techniques and overestimated the fundamentals of modeling and prep-work. It was fairly obvious that without atmospheric techniques, NMM or OSL, you'd have a hard time winning a category or even getting gold. I will always, first and foremost, be a premium army display painter so I have little to no interest in persuing any of these techniques to a large extent - they just don't look that good in a legion-scale sized display board or on the tabletop and you are forced to commit too seriously to your chosen gimmick for the entirety of your project... On the #roadtonovaopen2017 . A roadtrip isn't complete without #monster#energy . The USA always gets all this cool new stuff that I can never get in Canada. I can't wait to turn the new "Dia de los Muertos" themed #MangoLoco Monster Energy can into a #knight#titan . 😱 That is going to be extreeeeeeeeme. 💀 Expect lots of #convention coverage from #segstudio over the course of this weekend starting tonight with an - apparently - super secret and super special GeezDubya panel/reveal! Super pumped for a weekend of gaming and sight-seeing in the Nation's Capitol as well as entering some miniatures into the #capitalpalette painting competiton - one of which is going to be my Acastus Knight Porphyrion "Inositol Rex" from the #monsterlegion in the "vehicles" category. This will be the first time you'll be able to actually see it IRL (looks much better than my lousy pics, I promise!). Wish me some luck and come out Sunday and vote for it if you enjoy gazing longedly at my paintable trinkets! 🤣👌💯👍🎨
