so today i am going to finally do the new hobby challenge on my list. i think i may have planned to do it 2 or 3 times last week and it never materialized. ๐Ÿ˜€

i have been enjoying many great accomplishments from this project though! lots of pretty cool things for me to try this month. at some point near the end of the project i am going to talk a bit about the challenges that i did more than once and also look at the ones that have updates as they carried through the month. so many different types of challenges here!

i am still really curious about tarot though so i am making time today for learning about it and exploring the new deck i have. i love all these firsts! and reconnecting with lost beloved activities and adventures. truly a great month!

kind of a brief post today. very busy morning and i am beginning my journey towards better health. also i started my free class that i signed up for on the 6th day of my challenge. i am learning about latin american music styles, their history and influences, and their social and political relevance.

in the meantime it's also a big day for me restarting on some health and wellness goals i really left behind this past year. it's time to really get started again and keep a routine going. i am getting better at noticing when i am not taking good care: my blood pressure is high, my depression is harder to shake, my digestive system is angry... etc! i can go to all the doctors and therapy and get new prescriptions... but if i am not taking care of myself and being active about my health then everything else isn't going to work as well as it should. always be your best advocate and a great friend to yourself.

i revisited my previous post and decided that the "compliment a stranger" list item should be my pick for today! there are so many people i follow on instagram and while i do the occasional "like" or comment, i thought i would read more posts today and comment on several of them.

Yesterday at the SB farmers market was thissss beautiful Savoy Cabbage.. itโ€™s so yummy, itโ€™s like cabbage and kale had a baby โ˜บ๏ธ
I enjoy shopping at my local farmers market. It connects us to truly understanding food as medicine ๐ŸŒฟ

today i conquered the following challenge from my list: "find an excuse to wear a pretty dress." i may have cheated on this one a bit; i started making this costume in june/july to wear to the ohio renaissance festival :) i didn't need an excuse to wear this, but i also haven't worn such an elaborate costume - especially in a crowd - like... ever!

the theme of my costume is "deer diary" which i thought of randomly last year. i spent $0 on the costume, makeup, accessories, etc. my antlers are made of branches from our backyard and are wrapped in ivory yarn. the main skirt has diary pages on it that i wrote myself from a deer's perspective. i tea-dyed the pages in the sun to give an antiqued look. there is a key tied to one of the ribbons on my shawl. the shawl was made from an old skirt. the brown and white dotted skirt layer is from an old bridesmaid's dress. all the buttons and trinkets ate from my own collection through the years.

i knew not every challenge on my list was going to be easy. but i was hoping to avoid outcomes where i didn't feel so great. i suppose the lesson is to just keep learning from situations good or bad and to keep practicing mindfulness in times that are tough.

i am just going to say that i do everything in my power to avoid crowds in places i don't like going. so basically grocery shopping, christmas shopping, busy gas stations, waiting in line at the drivers license office, sitting in fast food drive thru lanes... i just have a tough time. my anxiety is a live wire in these situations because there are too many triggers. so many opportunities to become overwhelmed. i have left situations like these before rather than endure them.

i had to stop at the grocery today. it was abnormally busy for a friday morning but i needed something and i knew they would have the best price. i figured oh well at least i can try this challenge on my list: "navigate busy stores/lines with ease."

i tried. i really did. but my anxiety with people darting around, pushing past me, being rude to one another, crowding aisles, and being very pushy in the line is too much for me. i braved it but i can't say i felt kind or tried extra hard to not want to make a rude comment. i just looked down, weaved through the aisles to find what i needed and then just said nothing as i found the shortest line for checkout.

it wasn't awful but i just do not like how people behave in stores. i just need to keep trying to make it a less daunting experience.

i am pretty amazed at how today's "reconnect with a friend" challenge has gone so far. this day has been filled with surprises. i think the universe is really listening today or good karma is happening!

this morning i decided to email a friend for this challenge; someone i had lost touch with about a year ago. i volunteered for a conversational english program for several months last year. this woman was so excited to improve her english to meet some personal and career goals. we had really good sessions and talked occasionally via email in addition to our in-person meetings. when the program ended we spoke a few times and then time passed. i was thinking of her recently and was so curious to see how she and her family have been doing. i am anxious to hear back from her but even if we do not cross paths again i am so proud of her for coming to the programs and continuing to practice and build self-confidence with each of our meetings!

the reconnecting process didn't end with that email. a few hours later i received an email from another friend with whom i hadn't heard from in a month or two. she said she saw something on facebook that reminded her of me. now we have been writing back and forth today! AND in the midst of reconnecting with this friend, a pal in england replied to an email i sent 5 months ago!!! i am not even connected to these friends thru instagram, they don't know about this project yet, i do not use facebook, etc. i am so thrilled these friends not only wrote back but they wrote back on the same day! and they not only wrote back on the same day but they wrote back on the day i was doing a reconnecting challenge!

just so happy with how this challenge rewarded me in multiple ways. don't wait to say hello to someone you haven't talked to in awhile! do it soon! it could be the highlight of their day! #octoberopenmindheart

I recently blogged a few goals to keep in mind for the month of October, one of which is to get back into practising mindfulness. It's not hard to do, but I find it so hard to actually remember to do it! I guess that's why habit forming can be so hard eh? What are your best self care habits you try to keep up with?

This last week I had some old symptoms flare up, probably a reaction to stress.. so Intuitive Eating means I check in and see what my body really needs to feel better ๐Ÿฅ’ This week itโ€™s been a lot of veggies, more fats, and warm dinners, and tonics ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ™Œ
Our Bodies are always communicating with us.. we just have to quiet ourselves enough so we can hear ๐ŸŒฟ

it is day 10 of the october: open mind & heart project already! today i chose the "read a slim volume of poetry you haven't read before" challenge from my personal challenge list. see link in bio for the complete list.

rather than read poems by one author, i decided to read the april 2017 issue of "poetry" that has sat unread for 6 months. each edition contains all poetry and much variety and i haven't connected with poetry in awhile. "poetry" as a longstanding journal has always seemed a little more academic than the poetry to which i gravitate. but i am doing a challenge and don't expect to float through my list mindlessly :)

i did encounter many poems with references that seemed to require translation, reading every classic epic poem since the beginning of time, and religious allusions i didn't quite grasp. in these cases, i picked my battles; i did look up a few unusual words or references and found myself appreciating the poems much more. in other cases, though, there was simply too much to decipher to read for pleasure.

i enjoyed that most poems are free verse and that the few rhymed works were not sing-song. the poems i enjoyed best were familiar in subject or completely surprising. one poem somehow very beautifully used imagery and description of bird poop to the point that you forgot the author was actually writing about bird poop. LOL! in a poem called "pinocchio" the author ends the poem with "the ones on fire" which recalls the children's taunt "liar liar pants on fire..." and pinocchio had a penchant for lying. very clever way to leave the poem in a way that echoed the falsehood aspect of the character.

there were poems about varieties of roses, plants and animals, relationships, travel, being... this just sums up a few themes presented. while some poems were a bit more in that over-my-head higher academic realm, many were comfortable even when tossing a jarring image or strange wordplay within. this issue ends with a writing about the musical aspects of poetry and how emphasis on syllables can make a huge difference in the rhythm of a poem. very interesting!

since i started the october: open mind & heart challenge, i have been looking forward to the "research a new hobby/try it out" item that is on my list. i never had a particular new hobby in mind for this one but couldn't wait to start the ideation phase! i contemplated working on a new craft or some sort of decor. i do a lot of crafting and there are so many projects to choose from. it seemed like trying something outside of my already active craft realm might be a better fit for this month so that i tap into something a bit more fresh

a few months ago i purchased a beautiful tarot deck. it came with a lovely illustrated book and there is an accompanying app that can be purchased for a mobile experience. i have never had a tarot reading. i have no idea how tarot cards work. i envisioned diving into the book and learning about tarot and how to understand the cards and doing readings using various layouts. somehow i got the deck, admired it, read through some of the book, admired it, tried the app on my phone, thought it was cool... but that was it. and that was 7-8 months ago.

i am still so curious about tarot. i want to do some good research and practice and understand more deeply how tarot readings function. the aim of this challenge is to research, learn, try, understand... i am not seeking tarot for all the answers to my problems nor do i wish to pretend i have answers to give others. it truly is an opportunity to understand something very new and different to me. i would love to be able to eventually try doing some readings with the cards for practice. it is very intriguing to me but i never made time to see how tarot is used.

i decided to cross "watch a classic movie" off of my october: open mind & heart challenge list today. there are many classic or popular films that most people have seen that i have not. i really enjoy movies but don't often take the time to watch them as much as i used to.

i had a lot of assumptions about this film since my youth. i really thought it would be a cheesy movie with lots of screaming people in bathing suits. of course that classic shark approach music echoed in my mind any time someone mentioned this movie. but watching it actually made me realize the heart and excellent acting within. there was a lot of suspension of disbelief on my end, but for a 70s action/drama it has held up nicely. roy scheider and richard dreyfuss are great to watch throughout!

rounding out the first week of this challenge already! keeping things short and simple on this sunny summer-like saturday here in the midwestern united states. i have a to-do item from my list in mind. sometimes the very best thing to do is just take a bit of a mental vacation for a few hours; movies and music and books really help me get to that place where i can just set all good and bad aspects of my reality aside a bit. i kinda need this today.

rounding out the first week of this challenge already! keeping things short and simple on this sunny summer-like saturday here in the midwestern united states. i have a to-do item from my list in mind. sometimes the very best thing to do is just take a bit of a mental vacation for a few hours; movies and music and books really help me get to that place where i can just set all good and bad aspects of my reality aside a bit. i kinda need this today. * * october 7: not 100% sure which film yet but have been wanting to sit down and watch a classic film or one people talk about a lot that i have never seen. there are quite a few possibilities :) for me it's not just a matter of picking an "easy" challenge; but turning it into an education and making it more than just "i am going to watch a movie and move on." i want to watch and think about it a little more than i have in awhile. and it reconnects me to watching movies more often; something i have put off doing as much as i used to. * * will post more about my experiences with today's challenge a bit later in my evening post. thanks for reading about my little adventures in taking better care of myself, practicing mindfulness, and trying more acts of kindness. i hope your unique path is unfolding in ways that continue to both ease your move forward and create more knowledge along the way. #octoberopenmindheart

Women naturally have the tendency to ignore their boundaries. Trying to please, make others feel safer then themselves. But what this can do over time is diminish self esteem, and confidence. It can make the one saying yes all the time lay down at the end of the night and ask the question โ€œwhat about meโ€ and that what about me will be consumed in false pleasure and receiving: FOOD. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ
So ladies. Part of Self Love and Self Care is learning masterful Boundaries, and energetic awareness. Notice when you allow someone elseโ€™s view, or desire, to take over, and leave your desires under the rug. Over time this will take a toll on your health. โœจ๐ŸŒปโœจ๐ŸŒปโœจ๐ŸŒปโœจ๐ŸŒปโœจ๐ŸŒปโœจ๐ŸŒปโœจ๐ŸŒปโœจ๐ŸŒป
So the opposite of No is Yes. 
Learn to say Yes to your desires, Learn to say yes to your needs, Learn to say yes to nourishing your sweet soul โœจ

today i signed up for a free online course titled "latin american music: translating cultural sensibilities." this is a month-long class taught through open2study. about 2 years ago i took a nutrition course and an agriculture course through this site and found them both to be very enriching! although this course does not start until the 16th, i am committing today to not only entoll in this course but to be more engaged this time compared to my other courses and utilize the student message  boards to interact with other online students regarding course material. i will post more about my experiences with the course after it starts.

so this shall fulfill my october challenge list item in which i "take a free class." i originally thought i might take a one-time cooking class locally or a take part in an art night. i recalled how much i enjoyed the structure of the open2study courses a few years ago and saw this new course offering as a way to nurture my love of music with learning about forms of musical expression with which i am not so familiar.

i took a slightly different approach today and did the following challenge on my list: "try for 15,000+ steps in one day." i did 15,425+ steps today.

i am a firm believer that steps are mostly a good guideline for making sure i am staying active. it has been months since i tried to maintain 10,000 a day. on occasion, i would try for more, but i haven't pushed myself there in quite some time. it was tiring, but i feel good. i did a combination of cardio dance, walking (in and out of the rain!), jogging in place and climbing stairs. it felt really fantastic to go the extra steps and sweat more than my typical daily exercise.

this challenge was definitely a practice in patience. i replaced my moments of wanting to be done with the realization that if i kept going, my long workout would be done sooner!

Breast cancer awareness is celebrating 25 years of #pinkribbon  And to celebrate the cause some of our beauty favourites have teamed up to launch this beauty box. 
Big thanks to #esteelauder who pioneered the idea, back in 1992 launching pink ribbon which is the symbol of #breasthealth making it the voice for women with cancer, a movement that every woman needs to be aware and part off, check your boobs, stand up to
Cancer and end it. Let's be inspirational women by supporting this cause. The beauty box costs ยฃ25 where ยฃ15.00 goes towards breast cancer. I actually decided that my first #janeausten ยฃ10.00 will go towards a worthy cause, a woman's cause and did you know, Jane Austen died of cancer? If she were alive today she would want every single woman to donate money, especially money that has her face on it, towards pink ribbon. 
last month was #selfcareseptember I feel this really doesn't need any introductions. So this month, it's going to be all about the boobies. Yes, boobs and all. It's the month to really think and consider how 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer. I'm a big believer in 'if something doesn't feel right in your body then go get it checked out' I'm a woman in my 30s and if I think something doesn't feel at all right, then there's no doubt in my mind I'll go and get it checked out. We shouldn't have had to wait 25 years for a movement to take place, it wasn't something women or the public eye spoke about. I'm so glad it's so well discussed now and if it means me discussing boobs then I will. Don't be ashamed. We need to be talking about it. Support it, kick it, buy it and always remember to check it.

my goal for today is to do something on my list that is very relaxed and self-care-oriented. i have been very productive and buzzing along this week but yesterday i could tell that i needed to slow down before i a hit a wall. i didn't slow down and felt very detached and kind of deflated in the evening. i won't achieve much by feeling sluggish and miserable.

i wasn't sure exactly which challenge to complete today but then one found me this morning that i was not expecting. one item on my list this month is "if a situation arises that makes you angry or anxious, fight it with positive thinking and positive reaction." it isn't really a challenge you can go out and expect to encounter :) in all honesty, i didn't anticipate running into this situation so soon, so i hadn't really thought of possibilities for fighting public anxiety and frustration with good coping tools. but i did it.

i went to the store this morning just wanting to buy something with 2 coupons that made the item essentially free. i got a few other items too. i got to the counter at the store i frequent a few times a week and saw a cashier who was brand new. she was having some of the normal trouble with the register that comes with being new and not having finished training. when i showed her my store app barcode, none of my coupons were being counted and even trying my physical discount card did not work. she asked for help from a coworker who had a busy line.

there was a lot of me waiting and just wanting to be done and go home. but before i got annoyed at the situation or the cashiers i took a moment to try and relate the situation. i worked as a cashier very recently and recall my first days trying to ring people up when i had no familiarity with the register and lines of people and questions. while we waited for her coworker to help, i told her about understanding being a new cashier. i also told her i come into the store often, i really enjoy the employees there, and apologized for having so many issues with my coupons but that the app the store uses typically will show my coupons. she mentioned not yet having been trained on the app and i said i completely understand and that there is a lot to learn on the job and much of it is learned just from the different daily interactions and transactions and not just from the training manual. her coworker finally had a minute to assist and they were able to figure out the situation.

i wasn't sure exactly which challenge to complete today but then one found me this morning that i was not expecting. one item on my list this month is "if a situation arises that makes you angry or anxious, fight it with positive thinking and positive reaction." it isn't really a challenge you can go out and expect to encounter :) in all honesty, i didn't anticipate running into this situation so soon, so i hadn't really thought of possibilities for fighting public anxiety and frustration with good coping tools. but i did it. * * i went to the store this morning just wanting to buy something with 2 coupons that made the item essentially free. i got a few other items too. i got to the counter at the store i frequent a few times a week and saw a cashier who was brand new. she was having some of the normal trouble with the register that comes with being new and not having finished training. when i showed her my store app barcode, none of my coupons were being counted and even trying my physical discount card did not work. she asked for help from a coworker who had a busy line. * * there was a lot of me waiting and just wanting to be done and go home. but before i got annoyed at the situation or the cashiers i took a moment to try and relate the situation. i worked as a cashier very recently and recall my first days trying to ring people up when i had no familiarity with the register and lines of people and questions. while we waited for her coworker to help, i told her about understanding being a new cashier. i also told her i come into the store often, i really enjoy the employees there, and apologized for having so many issues with my coupons but that the app the store uses typically will show my coupons. she mentioned not yet having been trained on the app and i said i completely understand and that there is a lot to learn on the job and much of it is learned just from the different daily interactions and transactions and not just from the training manual. her coworker finally had a minute to assist and they were able to figure out the situation. * * (CONTINUED in next comment)

i honestly tried to come up with a good balance of things to experience this month in my list. it's only day 4 and i am finding the selection process to be both really intriguing and totally nerve-wracking! i struggle with anxiety and that's a big reason why i chose a mixed bag of things to give a chance this month and go beyond my usual comforts. i had a plan for today's list choice and cancelled. i made up a million excuses in my head to not participate and came up with the least worst one to use. this event was something i would really enjoy doing but i let my anxiety take hold. i would like to try this one later in the challenge,  perhaps after i try a smaller social setting, and not let myself find a way out so easily next time. blah.

but live and learn, right? the main lesson in this setback for me is that it's time to focus on self-care for the mind and anxiety in my challenge today. i may need to go off the list and dig into some healing techniques; explore some ways to cope that i haven't yet tried. i can't allow the anxiety beast to take the controls anymore this week! but it does become difficult to do so much if we don't show proper attention to our own needs first.

Day 27: Sounds - my IPod has always been an essential part of me since I can remember when. I love the sounds of my playlist and the music I listening to. I listen to songs that make me happy, songs that remind me of great memories and events and songs that remind me of the most important people in my life. Music influences all of us - I couldn't be without it
Day 28: Water - I love the coast, I don't go down to the cost that much from the City, but I always try and go somehow! Brighton is one of my favourite coastal towns to go to. This is my second favourite pictured: Southend ๐Ÿ˜€
Day 29: Reflection - I'm getting older, possibly not so wiser, but I've learnt through the years and experiences that time is a great healer, try and be as positive as possible, be as much of a community as you can and always make time for yourself ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ
Day 30: Changes - I always see this phrase around - and I really like it. There'll be a few changes in life over the next few years and I am really looking forward to it. I'm happy, I have great friends, lovely family, an amazing fiancรฉ and my health is getting better, so looking forward - here's a to a great future! ๐Ÿ˜€

(be sure to enjoy the slideshow of 10 pictures) today i decided to try a new recipe. i have never made my own sauce before and we had an abundance of tomatoes from our garden. i mostly followed a recipe online but improvised a little. i used a variety of fresh tomatoes, various italian seasonings, one yellow onion, olive oil, garlic, red and green pepper, a bit of brown sugar, salt, and pepper. it took about 5-6 hours to simmer. it required some prepping, occasional stirring, and after it was finished and cooled, i very lightly pulsed the sauce in the blender. the sauce is a little thin but for a first attempt, it was quite nice and zesty! tonight i used it in a vegetarian pasta i made. it was just right and so versatile as i can add different ingredients for different recipes.

i have little to no confidence in the kitchen. i tend to make the same things and not experiment much. this was really enjoyable even though it can be time consuming.

Day 20 on this caffeine free life! If you have not been following, let me sum it up quickly for you. 
1. Found heart issue. 
2. Doc said no more caffeine. 
3. Mandi very sad. 
4. Tries all kinds of decaf coffee because I really like coffee and the taste. (I know weird huh) 
5. Mandi decides there is no hope and decaf blows. 
6. My cousin showed me this decaf coffee. 
7. Mandi decides there is some hope left in the world. 
8. Satisfied customer. 
It really isn't bad at all! Try it if you are trying to kick the caffeine habit but really love coffee.

One of the things we talked about was making time for self care and what that really means to us. To me, grooming isn't self care. It's stuff that women have to spend a lot more time and money on than men do. And by " have to" I mean if we care how we look, which we are all conditioned to do.

Have you ever heard a man being told to " treat himself" to a work out, a pedicure or a haircut?? Not me. My husband has never said, "man my facial hair is out of control cause I haven't made time for ME this month".
.
So, what is self care then? What works for me is getting enough rest, working out, having dinner out with my friends or hubby, sitting down to read a book, getting away for the weekend, having a massage, a walk on the beach, a swim in the ocean. You know all the stuff you feel like doing.

I am not saying that I'm going to let my eyebrows grow out like this ( apparently the unibrow is the new trend BTW and if you like it then go hard), but just remember to call it what it is: getting pretty.
