According to a @esquire report, by @seeglazek, the #Sackler family, well known sponsors of the arts, are the majority owners of #PurduePharma , who produce and market the highly addictive painkiller #OxyContin .
Since 1996, when OxyContin went to market, upwards of 200,000 Americans have died from prescription drug overdoses. Thousands more have died after switching from prescription opioids to street drugs, such as heroin. This is in part due to Purdue Pharma downplaying OxyContin’s addictiveness and exploiting doctors’ confusion over its strength.
The bulk of the Sackler family’s wealth comes from this one drug.
