I walked in from the gym just a little bit ago after working for a couple hours and working out for an hour. Needless to say I was hungry- bordering on hangry ;)
I went in to the kitchen and there they were. Cookies I had just bought today staring at me. I wanted one...let's be honest, I wanted 12...BAD.
So I had a choice to make. Eat the cookies (which would have been so instantly gratifying and convenient) or make my smoothie (which would take a few minutes). Either choice would have been fine and I wouldn't necessarily feel bad about eating the cookies over my smoothie, but in the end, I made my smoothie, and here's why:
>> First and most importantly, I reminded myself that these cookies are actually for a party going on later tonight so if I want one, I can have one then. There's no need to eat them now instead of my smoothie when I can have them later.
>> And second, my smoothie (mango, banana, blueberry, spinach, vanilla Greek yogurt) will make me feel amazing, will help me recover, will give me tons of nutrients and will keep me full for a while where the cookies will not do any of those things.
I didn't use willpower (which I actually don't believe in) to abstain from eating the cookies, I tapped into my abundance mindset, reminded myself that the cookies are going to be around all day, all night and probably into tomorrow, and made the choice to stick with my plan of having a post-workout smoothie.
I've been practicing this mindfulness stuff for a while, and while making the choice between ideal and not-so-ideal has become a lot easier, it's still a conversation I have to have with myself on the regular. No one ever masters this mindfulness stuff. We just keep getting better and better as time goes on.
