In February 2017, the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties embarked on a strategic planning process, led by our Board of Directors and President and CEO, Charlie Davis. Our goal is that this plan reflects the people who matter most to us - our staff, members, volunteers, partners, and local community. Your input will help us develop a plan that guides the Y over the next three to five years, and builds on our 134-year history of service in Pierce and Kitsap Counties. All that’s missing is your voice. Visit the link in our bio to share your thoughts on what matters most to you.

In Kensington, three Michelin-starred chef @massimobottura has squashed the stereotypes of tattered soup kitchens with Refettorio Felix, a community kitchen for the vulnerable to dine with dignity. It has a fresh, changing menu thanks to @thefelixproject, a food waste organisation that supplies leftover produce from supermarkets and wholesalers every other day. It’s design-led too, with standout elements such as @vitra and #Artemide furniture and lighting and @royaldoulton crockery. Plus, every now and then, you’ll find a Michelin chef in the kitchen, like last month’s lunch by @merlin_johnson of @portlandrestaurant and @clipstonerestaurant.

Gomez attended the gala in NYC and discussed her fight with Lupus and her commitment to supporting Lupus research in a moving speech: “I also want people to know why research is so important and why we must support the scientists who bring all the promise of new discovery,” said Selena. She also expressed her hope that “all young women can realize their dreams of life without a Lupus.” ______________________________

Moving Day for James!!! This past Friday Vista Del Mar said goodbye to one of its residents, and @steppingforwardla helped him say hello to his new life of independence. This wonderful 18 year old man is leaving the foster care system and setting out on a new journey of independence supported by a paid internship at Stepping Forward and his own apartment right next door. James, the Staff of Vista Del Mar will treasure the seven years you spent with us and will continue to be there to cheer you on in this next chapter of your life.
I'm actually a bit of a closet denimhead, but have never had the opportunity to come out of the closet because almost everyone around me is either a "BKK shopper" (quantity over quality) or they like trendy, in-the-moment, streetwear type stuff. Or they spend all their money on food. So I *never* talk about it.
Proper jeans are a no-no for me cos I need that lower body mobility for work. So it's all denim jackets for me. I've been living in this one for the past week, to break it in and get some nice fades but also cos it's cosy and looks rad. No, I don't smell.
The first pic shows the two selvedges with the colours of Japan and Cote d'Ivoire - one fabric, two selvedge colours. Neat hor?

To celebrate my staying in India two weeks longer, the first of our new products is up on the shop!
These bags are the jam!! They are up-cycled and handwoven. Each one is hand made by women in rural migrant areas between Pune and Mumbai. They collect plastic waste from being thrown away. They hand wash, dry and cut the recycled plastic into strips. These strips are made into a "recycled poly" thread like material on a charkha (traditional wheel used to spin khadi cotton). Once the plastic is spun it's woven together on a handloom and finally stitched into these amazing products!!
Black + Blue day tote. Lined with inside pockets and zips closed. Bag: 14in x 10.5in | strap: 22in $46 + shipping.

#business#ngo#women#children#social#socialresponsibility#charity#philippines#family#friends#community
What does luxury mean to you?
Today, I received a call from a luxury handbag company. They were interested in collaborating with us on gold charms for their new range of handbags. It is then that I asked about the materials used. ‘Exotic leather” was the response. I replied that I didn’t think it would align with mine or my companies ethics. She said she’d email me the details for me to think about it. These handbags have been featured in the top fashion magazines. And as I followed the link she sent me, I felt uneasy. They sell for thousands, and it would be fantastic to collaborate on an exciting project. But not this.
I did my own research. I found out just how these ‘exotic’ beautiful creatures suffer for the sake of a handbag.
Well not in my name. Bert is a small business, and I live and breathe it. The opportunity (and exposure) to collaborate with a brand like this would have been incredible. But I probably wouldn’t have been able to sleep at night. Morally and ethically, Bert does not support or partner with brands that profit from animal cruelty.
Individuals have a responsibility to research what they are funding when they buy a product, and brands have a social responsibility too.
The diamonds that I use are ethically sourced. The boxes that I have specially made are sustainable. The gold is recycled. And personally, your girl Bert over here refuses to eat meat because of the environmental impact. 🌱💎💕
The @peta website is a brilliant source and has an excellent article about exotic skins. 🙏🏻 Oh, and to me, luxury means a beautifully crafted product: created with soul and good intention.
It’s mad how this shit is still happening in 2017. Footage of a modern-day Libyan slave auction has been circulating throughout social media, revealing that young West-African migrants are being sold for as little as $400. These young Black men who are in search of a better life in Europe, are being met with starvation, abuse and mutilation, before they have even left the coast. How has this been going on so openly? We need the UN, the African Union and the Libyan authorities to step in and put a stop to this shit. Africa needs to start standing together. ✊🏽✊🏽

Had some (super cute) help spreading the love today! The kiddos assisted in making and delivering a heap of handmade sandwiches, chips, and water to a few homeless camps around town
