Thanks for all the bday love! Aside from happy bday wishes, I got a ton of messages in my inbox about advice about becoming a data scientist and where to begin. I was reminded today, “there are many different flavors”. Which is true! 🍦 There are people who do infrastructure, analysis, algorithms, etc. It’s a title that is still figuring itself out! So in the meantime, try and learn as much as you can so you can jump into a role that’s right for you! 🤓 Math you need: statistics, matrix algebra, calculus. Computer Science you need: scripting language like Python (or R if you work in the government), SQL, and read about big data techniques (it may be hard to create a big data set right away on your own!). Then once you feel comfortable with that, dive into machine learning exercises (Kaggle.com). 😎🙌🏼💻 Try algorithms but don’t expect yourself to be an expert on them all - even seasoned professionals have it on their to do list to revisit a couple, volunteer for projects, ask questions, read blogs, scrape data of your own and build FULL systems. You’ll learn from each experience :) good luck! The great thing about this field there is always another 100 things to learn.
We often find that when things just aren’t going right over and over again, there is a reason. It’s not because we aren’t lucky or the universe has it out to get us, but it’s that we have made decisions or put actions in motion that have not given us the results we want. ⠀
Quite simply, it’s because of a series of choices we have made – choices that don’t generate the results we are looking for.⠀
It’s time for you to make a different plan. Maybe you need to say “NO” when your gut is hinting that you should, and take that risk to say “YES” to something different. If what you have been doing lately isn’t bringing you the results you want – CHANGE IT.⠀
Stop it. Delete it. Start over. There is nothing like a new perspective, inspiration, book, class, consultant, workshop etc.. to help you get rid of the old and move on to the new. Do it today. Delete what’s not working so we can start to add in the things that do.⠀
You’ll be happier you did!!!
