Prepping for this night super well!!! Cinnamon & rice milk porridge with dates, cacao, banana, toffee milk (blended rice milk, dates, water and tahini), and chia seeds.
Now Colombian coffee mochas (pick some up at the artisan market in green park station tomorrow, it's the best coffee ever!) - with cacao rice milk for extra energy!
The sun is shining, this is the view from the office, and I had nice cream for breakfast 😊 also the very first @gfn_bath pitch night last night was amazing!!! Look up Good For Nothing Bath and find out all about it!
But, 'how do I make nice cream?' you ask - well it's super easy 😁
Blend some frozen banana chunks (ideally prep these the night before - I always have a tupperware full of chopped banana in the freezer cos I love ice cream and smoothies hehe)
So - blend the banana chunks with a splash of plant milk/water, then add anything you like! I added cashews, cinnamon, and then after the blend whole raisins, desicated coconut, cacao nibs, and date pieces.
CHOC CHIP CINNAMON ICE CREAM 🎉🎉🎉🍦🍦🍦 Have a fab day everyone!
@jamieoliver and Sustain are working with local authorities, food groups and food outlets to help people recognise how much sugar they consume and the associated negative health consequences. An easy start to reduce your sugar intake is to swap the pop, grab a glass of water instead #sugarsmart#cambridge
Love having smoothies for breakfast! I didn't have any bananas for a few days (and didnt have any time to get to the market!) so was going without breakfast, and it makes me so prone to snacking before lunch!
This is kale, banana, cavalo nero, chia seeds, tahini, sunflower seeds, cashew nuts and water. And it sorts me out! And even if I do have an early lunch that works better for me than eating a late lunch and then late dinner.
Everybody's different so do whatever is right for you! If you want a big old bowl of porridge then cool! Or toast, go for it. I feel too heavy if I eat too much in the morning and I get sluggish. Having a light, mostly raw breakfast seems to sort me out, and I'm happy to have found a bit of a rhythm for my self.
However, if you eat something sugary for breakfast, like jam, sugary Cereal (most cereals are so read the label!!!), 'low fat' yoghurt, musli, pastries, or - heaven forbid! chocolate! You will peak and crash super early, and get caught in the cycle of having sugar, getting sugar craving, having sugar, getting sugar craving.
That white stuff affects concentration, mood, motivation, as well as all the physical responses!
Start your day the way that's right for you. But sugar 99% ain't gna give you a good start.
Had this dinner earlier that reminded me of being a child and having potato smiley faces as a treat! I was super hungry when I got home and this was basically all we had!
Leftover lentil and veg soup from Hamilton House yesterday with added peas, sourdough (also leftover from yesterday) from the @oldmarketassembly topped with vegan pesto and vegan cheese, peas with coconut oil, salt and pepper, and leftover chips from Hamilton House with vegan cheese! Plus some vegan mayo and Whole Earth ketchup (with no added sugar! - if you're wondering why check the label of your regular ketchup and you'll see!) Rather than over eating and being uncomfortably full, I'd rather take half away and have it the next day! Helps me out when I have no time to get the the shop and have back to back meetings all day!
So here's to eating comfort food that's quick and easy and reminds you of childhood, whilst getting your daily veggies and still being sugar free. Win win win 😊
#sugarsmart Identics have been looking at our daily sugar content and have found some surprising results! Small changes can make a big difference and remember to be sugar smart #identics#TEAM#teeth#toptips
Made salad for lunch this morning, then thought it looked a bit boring so I wrapped it all up in sushi nori!
Purple and green kale, lettuce, shoots n sprouts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, cucumber, and dressing: lemon juice, Apple cider vinegar, vegan pesto, almond oil, balsamic, oregano, turmeric, salt, and pepper. And a little vegan mayo to glue it all together.
YUM! Been loving using these as wraps instead of tortillas (which have sugar in them for some reason!). Lots of salad dressings also contain sugar, so check out the labels or make your own!
My fave milk on offer for £1 at Waitrose yay! No added sugar and it doesn't curdle, the only thing is that it's so delicious that you might get through a carton in a day!
Their vanilla flavoured milk is also sugar free 😊 be aware though, some plant milks aren't! Some of the Alpro ones have sugar in them. Always worth reading the label on everything!
Made this awesome pizza last night with one of my oldest and bestest friends. She's been putting me up in London while I'm on this course and it's so great to see her!
Instead of ordering in, we just knocked this up in about the same amount of time! The base is just flour and water with herbs and spices, then a chickpea, tomato, onion and fresh basil blend for the sauce base. Topped with courgette, kale, spinach, mushrooms, chilli, pepper, tomatoes, and a drizzle of Tahini to glue it all together.
Did you know most take away pizzas have sugar in them? Making food yourself is always the best option!
And it tastes so good and is less than a fiver to make! Perfect! We also watch R. Kelly's hip hopera (not all 33 chapters though) which is hilarious and I encourage you to watch if you need a laugh!
Have a fab Sunday you lot!
Amazing lunch spread at this training course in London today! Loads of salad stuff, tomatoes, hummus, lentil salad, beans, oat cakes and rice cakes, lettuce, cucumber, and all the tea/coffee you can drink. And everything is vegan!
And a whole basket of biscuits that I was admittedly unable to resist. When I eat sugar now though, my teeth start to hurt, my gut feels like there are sharp stones in there, and about 30/40mins later I feel a droopiness behind my eyes and I get sluggish.
I probably didn't even notice before I spent some time sugar free, and now it really maintains my awareness of the damage sugar is actually doing to me when I eat it. One biscuit is probably ok, but if I ate a whole or even half a packet now I know I would feel ROUGH.
Give it a go for sugar awareness week from the 30th Oct- 5th Nov and see how you feel.
If you feel so inclined, you can even take our survey at www.bathnes.gov.uk/sugarsmartsurvey
Veggie pasta salad for lunch! Ciaran made a bunch of yumminess for dinner last night so I took the leftovers and added some kale, shoots, lettuce, broccoli, balsamic vinegar and nutritional yeast to bulk it out a bit😁
Simple and satisfying. And I'm gna go and eat peanut butter with a spoon when I get home, can't stop thinking about it after seeing @chloeeva last night and sharing our love of pb!

Taking down the Sugar Smart display today. Keep an eye out for it popping up elsewhere in Bath soon though!
It's so important to get these messages out there - by reducing our Sugar intake we could have a much better quality of life! The top human killers are all related to diet, the NHS is under pressure because we are all sick and because our government is too cowardly to take action on sugar (or pay doctors the living wage or do a number of other things but they're not strictly related to sugar...). Is illness and even death worth it for a few biscuits a day? And even if you look healthy on the outside, you could be a TOFI: thin on the outside, fat on the inside. So treat yourself well, aim for longevity, and eat WHOLE FOODS. processed stuff almost always has sugar and other unnecessary stuff added. Read the labels, drink more water, and consider swapping your sweet snack for something healthier.
Oh, and fill in the survey: www.bathnes.gov.uk/sugarsmartsurvey - it takes 2 minutes and will help us massively to shape the campaign around you.

Another fab 'Big Fat Vegan Meal' with the lovely peeps of Bath at @chapel_arts_cafe_bath ❤❤❤ I started organising these a year ago soon after I took over admin on the 'Bath Vegetarians and Vegans' Facebook page - add it up if you wna be involved in more local stuff like this! It was originally started to build a community and get to know each other whilst eating tasty food (we go to a different restaurant each month) and demonstrating the demand for vegan food in Bath. And it's working! Many places have added more vegan options to their menu!
And while this post isn't specifically about sugar (obviously, check that vegan tirimisu!), it is about building communities to help you be the kind of person you want to be. Want to eat more healthily and know more about where your food comes from and who's played a role in shaping it? Build friendships with people who are also interested. Social media is a great tool for that.
And also remember that the Sugar Smart campaign is all about being sugar SMART, not necessarily sugar FREE. I have chosen to change my habits and now am probably 98% sugar free just because I feel so much better and I don't wna buy back into that industry, but at special occasions I will enjoy a dessert! I just no longer take it as a given. So be kind to yourself! Feel for what your body needs, but also what it wants, and take it one step at a time 😊
So make friends with interests you can share, be kind, and enjoy your food because it makes ya feel good. Enjoy things, life is too short not too! 👌
Thanks again chapel arts for having us!
Reading Sonia Sodha's article on p36 of last weekends Observer entitled 'must we really be a nation of fat-shamers?'. Despite the fact that obesity is now "second only to smoking as a cause of premature death in Europe and North America", there is a serious lack of provision in terms of health care options and support through lifestyle changes for obese people, because even the medical profession is not immune to weight discrimination.
There is still a social stigma around being overweight, due to our associations with obesity of a lack of willpower, sloth, gluttony, and greed - 3 of the 7 deadly sins that have shaped Western morality since the 4th Century.
She says "food may not be chemically addictive in the same way as nicotine or alcohol, but food manufacturers have been in an arms race to load processed foods with increasing levels of tasty fat, sugar, and salt to leave us wanting more. And while abstinence is a key element of dealing with alcohol or drug addiction, it's hardly an option for chronic over eaters, who have to find a way of re-engineering their relationship with food." It can be hard to change your eating habits, but choosing to eat whole foods and making sure to read the labels can help to increase your awareness of the food you're eating.
For me, the motivation was the health benefits (physical and mental) of cutting out sugar and eating more whole foods, but I was also motivated by the fact that the food industry is so corrupt (companies like Coca Cola fund studies into the effect of soda on the body... um, can anybody say 'vested interest'???) and I don't want to buy into it. For me, cutting out sugar is like a big middle finger up to big bad corporations who profit from our ill health.
Any other revolutionaries out there wna join me in getting sugar smart, taking ownership of our health, and saying a fat "f*ck you" to companies like Coca Cola?
What a fantastic Saturday! Slept in til almost 11 (used to be a daily occurrence but now it's definitely a rarity!), went to the farmers market for my veggies, had a bath, caught up with a friend over @roundhillroastery coffee for a few hours, caught up on some life admin, did an hour of yoga, went for a solo bike ride up the two tunnels greenaway, and now I'm enjoying a lovely fruity snack 🍊✌ I'm finally getting back into having a day off every week and it's beautiful. It helps me build that ocean of calm into my core before the next week starts, something I didn't have for most of the summer when I was working 7 days a week!
Eat healthy, get some fresh air every day, and breathe all the stale air out of your lungs. Also cut out sugar.
P.S. @teenygreenyfarm I already used some of your shoots, they're irresistible!
Having a super early dinner cos I had no lunch and my tummy as rumbling! Gotta listen to our bodies, don't we.
This is just some leftover curry and tofu from yesterday, with some also leftover hummus and chips 😋
Simple yet satisfying.
It's good to always have something ready so in moments of extreme hunger (or hanger) you don't end up reaching for a sugary snack! It'll be nutritionally void and won't keep you satisfied, so just have something else instead.
Why not do a sugar smart challenge for a week? See how much difference it makes.
Cooked up a fat curry after the gym today!!! Brown rice, and the curry is: red onions, garlic, green chilli, and all the herbs and spices fried in almond oil. Add tomato passata and more spices and simmer. Add chopped sweet potato, mushrooms, marrow, and carrot and let that all get groovy (I had a shower in this interim so do what you gotta do!).
Then I did something perhaps regrettable, and added a bunch of chopped celeriac leaves. They're pretty bitter, and I didn't realise... so I added a handful of chopped dates to balance it out. And it was all good 😊 .
I would've added coconut cream if we had any but we didn't and it was actually fine without. But I did add some tofu on second thoughts to get that VEEGZ PROTES 😂💪
Thinking of you @anneli.tree you curry friend 😙
Cooking from scratch is ALWAYS better than buying pre-made stuff from the shop. Some curry sauces in a jar contain loads of unnecessary sugar and it's so easy to cook at home!! Not to mention much cheaper!
Just turned down a tray of cakes. Who am I? Sometimes being Sugar Smart is hard, but actually cake wouldn't make me feel good and probably wouldn't even be worth the short-term satisfaction of having it in my mouth.
So I guess... thanks but no thanks. No need to put on my disgruntled face as shown in this picture 😊😄 #sugarsmart#sugarsmartuk#sugarsmartBANES#cake#learningtosayno#thanksbutnothanks
Enjoyed in the @wildwalcot / @vegmead community garden on Walcot street, with the addition of some nasturtiums (which are edible and beautiful!) Nasturtiums used to be used for urinary tract infections, kidney problems, and for their general antibiotic action. They are also high in vitamin C and taste like rocket, what a perfect little plant!
Grab some and have a taste next time you walk past a plant, the smaller flowers will be less bitter so go for those if you can find them 😋🌺 Healthy food is all around, we just aren't practised in finding it! The food industry has a lot of money to spend on advertising and shaping the way we (consumers) see them. For example, Coca Cola has already spent £2,892,916 this year on advertising.
When you think that the cost of diabetes to the NHS is over £1.5m an HOUR, it's pretty disgusting to think that companies like Coca Cola spend so much money encouraging behaviour that gives people diabetes and costs taxpayer's money.
So think about that next time you buy a sugary 'treat' or walk past a plum or apple tree, or a nasturtium plant. We could all benefit from foraging a little more and eating a lot less rubbish.
Lunch today! Amazing purple broccoli from the Saturday farmers market at Green Park Station (isn't it fab???), grated celeriac, mushrooms, grated apple (from the neighbour's garden), allotment tomatoes, tenderstem broccoli, cavalo nero, carrot sticks, and hummus (for dat chickpea protein! And deliciousness of course). All raw except the hummus and dressing. Which is a squirt of vegan mayo, wholegrain mustard, water, lemon juice, and a tiny bit of almond oil.
I love the crunchiness of raw food! So much better for your teeth to crunch on a carrot than munch on sweet stuff! Did you know that 90% of tooth decay is preventable? Eat less sugar!! #sugarsmart#sugarsmartuk#sugarsmartBANES#vegan#whatveganseat#rawvegan#salad#raw#rawtil4#purplecauliflower#colourfulfood#fresh#crunchy
Made some super nutritious tasties to give my mumma when i see her tomorrow! It was her bday on Saturday but she'll be riding a motorbike (badass woman) so I didn't want to give her a cake that would get squished. .
I discovered something genius recently: raw energy balls can become cookies if you squish and bake them! .
These ones are cardamom and hemp flavoured. Recipe:
1/2 cup mixed nuts
1/4 cup hemp seeds
Sprinkles of cinnamon & nutmeg
6ish cardamom pods.
1 cup dates
1 tbsp tahini
1 cup water .
Then mix together in a bowl, add goji berries, raisins, extra oats and nuts, and just play around until the consistency is right.
Shape into balls and let them sit in the fridge while you do some other stuff.
Then squish into circles and bang in the oven until they're hard to the tap (precision baking I know).
And of course NO SUGAR or agave, brown rice syrup, honey, date syrup, etc etc because your body digests them all the same! Yep, just like refined white sugar. 😲
Uh oh, I've become one of them... an Insta food blogger... starting the day with a 😨 green smoothie!!! 😂😂😂 Frozen banana, unfrozen banana, cavalo nero, cacao nibs, water, and a splash of almond milk. 👌
Smoothies can often contain way more sugar than you might think, so if you're going to have them make your own! Then you know exactly what's in it. I would actually eat a banana and some cavalo nero and drink a glass of water, which is what this smoothie contains. Whereas innocent smoothies often contain way more fruit than what you would actually eat in one sitting. Just be aware! And while fruit sugar is fine to consume, when it's blended the fibre is removed - and that's the bit that slows down your digestion of sugar (to avoid the insulin spike). And it's not great for oral health either!
So smoothies are tasty and nutritious, but these are things to consider 🤓
Hyped to go to the Green Rocket Cafe for lunch with colleagues to celebrate one of them getting married on Saturday! 👰
