This was one of the most bizarre life-saving cases I've had since I became an M.D. in 2000! It'll never be surpassed and I'm quite amazed I was able to make this difficult diagnosis and save her life! This story is 100% true. I had a jumbo sized lady (275 kilos or 605 lbs.) come into my surgery department absolutely hysterical! She told me her friend referred her to me because "you're the best surgeon around"! I pulled three chairs together, had her sit down and got her to quit crying. She told me she was sure she was dying from cancer! She related a very extensive close family history of gastric, pancreatic, bowel and breast cancer! She had numerous surgeries including a gastric bypass, diabetes and hypertension! She told me what finally brought her in to me was that for the past six weeks she had been having severe lower back, bowel and rectal pain! Naturally she was a classic case that would lead any doctor to follow thru with all the tests to check her for cancer, as she was very high risk! So as I'm thinking of all the tests I needed to order, I had to first do a proper physical exam on this patient! I brought in several nurses to help, I did an abdominal exam which was negative but it's hard to do a proper exam on such a large patient. I then had to try to do a rectal, and as the nurses pulled apart her butt-cheeks (that's technical terminology) I found her "cancer"!!! It was a wrapped, cherry tootsie pop with the stick still attached!!! I managed to pull it out and the patient gave an enormous gasp of relief! I then stopped any further exam! She asked me if I removed the cancer? I calmly said "Yes I did, you're cured!" I handed her the offending tootsie pop and she said "I lost that on my couch several months ago!" I thanked the poor nurses who had tears rolling down their faces and were biting holes in their lips to not laugh! I discussed the dangers of confectionary items and sent a happy, cured patient home. Thank God I have a good poker face! #tootsiepop#doctorslife#godhelpme#surgery#lovemypatients#surgeon#surgeonslife#nothingisordinary#dangerouscandy#laughatlife#md#omg#ohmygod#nokidding#obesityisnotfunny#cancerscare
"Human behaviour flows from three main sources: desire, EMOTION and knowledge" - Plato.
Surgeons can put on a hard exterior to cope with the stresses and pressures of work. We musn't forget that showing emotion is not a weakness, it is a strength 👊

Just chilling with my favorite new shoes: Sid Mashburn chocolate penny loafers. I’m almost as picky about what goes on my feet as I am about what goes on my hands – #SurgeonsLife . Have a great weekend ya’ll.
