this little guy is pretty happy ☺️ living on a zero-waste farm, he is fed a healthy diet of agricultural by-products which are manually chopped and ground up by a contraption hooked to a stationary bicycle! 🌾🌿🌱🚲
Sneak peek of the Concept drawings for the new Aquaponics test facility. A small system hovering just over 23sqm of grow bed space. Wash, prep, and cold storage station located in the back of the facility. This micro farm will give the team at farm 416 valuable experience in designing and operating Aquaponic farms. Fitting the facility with the latest innovations in energy efficient lighting solutions and backup power supplies tied into solar panels. The greens produced will feed families only blocks away from the facility minimizing the carbon footprint. At the moment discussions concerning the fish raised in the system have included the potential to raise species that will be released into our local water ways to restock depleting native fish. I will keep you all updated on the progress of the project.
#Churchill famously called #Uganda the #PearlofAfrica for its magnificent beauty. It will be our last, but not means least, stop to meet our producers, hear their #stories and #taste their products. Uganda lies almost completely in the #Nile basin, with many lakes – the largest being #LakeVictoria which connect us to our other destinations #Kenya and #Tanzania . With good soil conditions and plenty of rain, Uganda has been successful in #agriculture . We look forward to meeting #socialentrepreneurs who are helping to use #sustainableagriculture to improve lives. We’ll be travelling over the weekend, but looking forward to bringing you the beginning of the Storimarket story on #Monday . Have a fantastic weekend!
I had the great privilege and pleasure to spend time with Dr Claude Burguignon this week. One of the worlds pre eminent experts on soil & microbiology. His experience, knowledge and understanding of everything about soil is amazing. Not just grapes & wine but all things agriculture, nature and the environment. It was so good to have long chats about soil health, taste wines and discuss what really impacts and expresses where they come from. Healthy, balanced and alive soils give you the truest expression. Something I have believed in and seen for a long time. Soils constantly hit with herbicides , chemicals & artificial fertilisers completely destroy the microbes. Doesn’t matter what you farm, this is the result. It was very pleasing for him to comment on the health of the soil and depth of roots, indicating the soils are alive. Extremely grateful for this opportunity and huge thanks to Rob Walters @stuck_ferment & his team for arranging Claude to visit. A truly great learning experience. So much to ponder and think about plus ways to improve the soil & management system. The best thing about Claude is he is a great bloke; honest & genuine, down to earth & loves a cold beer ! #soilhealth#biologicalfarming#sustainableagriculture#microbilogy#thousandcandles
2017 was a big year for us! We’re so excited for everything to come including new community events, a recycling program with CLYNK, updates to the farm and more! Check out our 2017 Year in Review blog at the link in our bio and stay tuned for more updates!
We are stewards and tenants of the land, not owners. This means we share our farm with other tenants—from pollinators (🦋) to pests (🐭).
The Hebrew term for stewardship is “Le'ovda u'lishmora,” which means to work and protect the earth. On the Farm, part of our stewardship means managing pests rather than eradicating them. Instead of subduing the land we strive to protect and care for it. #farmlife#landstewardship

One out of every three mouthfuls of food in the American diet, which might consist in fruit, nuts and coffee beans is a product of #honeybee pollination.🐝🐝🐝However, traditional pesticides are killing off beneficials like bees that support plants’ reproduction. With 42 colonies of bees having collapsed in the United States in 2015 alone, our food production system is at risk! Demand the use of safe, natural pesticides like neem that kill off pests, but are harmless to those which support the plant’s growth, like bees. Find out more about how to protect our ecosystem with neem at www.Neempedia.com
"Over the last 50-60 years, the attitude has been to get rid of the bad guys through pesticides, not understanding that if you destroy the bad guys, you also get rid of the good guys. When we nuke soils and destroy life, what comes back are the bad guys.
Put your workforce back into place. They don’t need holidays. Just make sure they’re in your soil and feed them. …. Our job is to make sure there is a diversity of micro-organisms, so plants can choose which organisms they need."
-Dr. Elaine Ingham
#DidYouKnow you know that all parts of the neem tree have special and beneficial properties?🌳What are they and what can they be used for? ⠀ ⠀• Neem oil: Extracted from the seeds of the neem tree, neem oil has insecticidal and medicinal properties. It is used for pest control, medicines and even cosmetics!
⠀• Neem seed cake: Remains once the oil is extracted from the seeds. An effective pesticide, fertilizer and organic alternative to antibiotics in livestock.
⠀• Neem leaves: Powerful greens that contain Azadirachtin, a compound unique to the neem tree. Its natural pesticide effect disrupts the growth cycle of leaf-eating insects, deterring them from feeding on plants and reducing their rate of reproduction.
⠀• Neem flowers: With their sweet, honey-like smell, neem flowers are used in aromatherapy for a relaxing and calming effect
What are the other parts used for? Learn more about neem's anatomy at www.NEEM.world!
Meet the beautiful family behind @templetonfamilyorganics! Pictured here are Brian, Christina and four of their six children that work together on the farm.
Christine said, “…we are raising our pigs on pasture. It’s important for people to know that just because a pork product is labeled organic, it doesn’t necessarily mean the pig ever sees a blade of grass,” she continued, “Our Certified Animal Welfare Approved by @agreenerworldorg label provides consumers with an easy way to assess what kind of product they’re getting. It shows our customers that we really are farming the way we say we are.” PC @templetonfamilyorganics #agreenerworld#happypigs#familyfarm#NHfarms
There's this lady Tatjana who has a farm not far away from where I live. She sells her produce at the local market.
She has two sons and a very energetic future daughter in law who all help her.
Her specialties are local food items, such as homemade saurkraut and all kinds of root vegetables, ... she also offers free range eggs and occasionally a chicken or two - to a friend.
This is one of those chickens, next to her saurkaut and potatoes.
Here's a crazy idea: what if we stop labeling ourselves with stickers like vegan, keto, low carb, paleo, ... and befrend a person who feeds us instead?
Support local farmers instead of diet zealotry. Just a thought ...
😄Banksia on a beautiful day!
🏵We've been pretty busy first with going away to Camp Creative and then comming home and catching up with all the farm work. And to complicate matters we've been swapping over phones from Apple to Android.
🌹What have you been up to?
Who says mid-winter food is boring!? This week’s #producebox of local treats featuring Leeks from @fieldsfarm , Kennebec potatoes from @casadfamilyfarms , Rubinette Apples from @mthoodorganicfarms , Rainbow Chard and Sunchokes from @groundworkorganics , Shiitake Mushrooms from #mycologicalproducts , Celery and Onions from #cincoestrellasorganicfarm , and Oregon Parsley Root and Celeriac sourced from our friends at @organicgrownco
Since I love technical sports clothing, it's only natural that I'm interested in what sustainable materials are making their way onto the sports scene. Insulation, not the most sexy of fashion topics, is essential for both buildings and clothing to keep us warm. Merino wool has been the darling natural fiber of the sports industry for the past few years due to it's moisture management, temperature regulation, and odor control. Insulation from recycled synthetic content continues to progress while new quilting designs are making insulation better at trapping and circulating body heat. ----------------------------------
I am however excited about Flocus, the manufacturer of kapok-based insulation. The kapok tree produces fruit whose fibers have a hollow structure that makes lightweight insulation. This filling also naturally repels water and is quick-drying, anti-moth, anti-mite, and antibacterial. "The kapok and sugarcane filling filling is also fully vegan and biodegradable, while kapok only requires natural rainwater to be grown successfully, therefore reducing water consumption." (www.knittingindustry.com)
Because the kapok tree grows on hillsides and their fruits - from which their fibers are harvested - are inedible, this fiber represents sustainable agriculture since it doesn't take away from valuable ag land and food production. Growing more kapok trees may even provide more clean air and carbon sinks.
Yvon Choinard showing off our styrofoam eating beetle larva to people in his cafeteria at Patagonia headquarters stoked to be talking story with him for our next film about how we are introducing our technology to the world through the surf culture! we covered quite a bit of topics from what's going on right now on the planet to stopping oil rigs off the coast and the shrinking of public lands and what's going on between him , and the current administration!
But, mostly , we talked about food and regenerative agriculture! will keep you posted and will release little bits at a time. stay tuned for the full story on the release of our next film ! in the next year we will be shooting wherever we can bring attention to the plastic Tide's and other crisis are happening that we are educating folks to and sharing some solutions!
