Spent some time this afternoon checking in on the Vermilion Valley Lodge. A few times every year we get to step outside the norm and get involved in larger scale projects.
L&J Contracting our Authorized Dealer is doing the framing on this complex build. Main floor walls of phase 1 are complete. Second floor joists are going up as I type this.
Project is progressing nicely with credit to our panelized walls fitting beautifully with the combination of existing structure, new concrete and new steel. It’s wonderful when a plan comes together. #systembuilt#panelsarebetter#panelizedconstruction#assistedlivingfacility#albertabuilders
Two of the four #athertongardens#housingcommissiontowers in #fitzroy , one of 7 big #highrise#publichousing estates in #Melbourne , all built between the mid 60s and 1971. There are also dozens of single towers dotted about, nearly all built using the same #pebbledash#precastpanels , produced by the commission's own factory.
What started as #slumclearance providing better housing (eg with internal bathrooms) for poor renters in the inner suburbs turned into a bit of a juggernaut, and came to a crashing halt. Unlike Britain, where lots were built substandard, and estates became horrible 'sinks', and have been demolished, our estates, after a period of crime, drugs, tvs flying off balconies etc in the 70s and early 80s, became the place where the most recent refugees are put. So they've housed Vietnamese, Bosnians, Afghans (I'm guessing actually) - anyway they now house lots of Somali and Sudanese, as well as few now elderly original tenants. So the towers are still useful, and house too many people to just pull down. (though I've heard that since the external panels are load bearing, they'd implode rather nicely).
