"SIESTA SA DALOM SARISA"
Watercolor & Ink
Diri sa amon, a Sarisa tree is a symbol of fun childhood memories -- of days when cousins and neighbors meet on summer and spend the entire day climbing trees, playing 'tumba patis', 'panaguay', 'piko' and 'balay2x'. We loved picking fruits of the Sarisa tree which sometimes became a contest of who got more than whom (and so the most daring to climb higher always won). Those tiny fruits were favorite ingredients to our "organic recipes" in our make-shift kitchen at the backyard. The tree would also serve as a shady space to stay for a quick rest, a chitchat, a siesta, or to make 'muni-muni'. If there is one thing I wish for kids these days, it is the freedom to be young and free. If there is one thing I wish we had in every home, I would wish for backyards with trees. "Siesta Sa Dalom Sarisa" is one of my artworks at the "Diri Sa Amon" watercolor group exhibit. Catch the exhibit on its last week at SM City Bacolod. Fall in love with all things Negros told in watercolors.

Negros is known as the sugar capital of the Philippines. The story behind the success of the sugar industry is not the milling company that makes them but the people behind known as "sakadas," who carry the harvested sugarcanes on their backs and load them on to big trucks before they are transported to be milled. ...

Diri sa amon, Negrenses are characterized by their laidback lifestyle. I guess any traveller who has come to visit Negros would know how it is to seemingly forget the hands of Time. Time, in Negros, is measured by siestas, by cups of native coffee, by photographs of breathtaking views, by guilty indulgence of sweets and pastries... With some old-world charm, I wanted to recreate this particular Negrense trait set in a favorite time of the day -- coffee break. I could only imagine the titas gracefully waving a hand in the air, saying, "Inday, cafe." Visit "Diri Sa Amon" a watercolor group exhibit at the 2/L North Wing SM City Bacolod. Exhibit runs until November 19.

How We Get to Bacolod
Watercolor & ink on 300gsm Arches
3/3 of my pieces for DIRI SA AMON watercolor group exhibit at 2/L North Wing, SM City Bacolod. Exhibit runs till Nov19.
Silay is a quiet, laidback city known for its old preserved houses that date back to the Spanish colonization. Living here for(ever) is the best. However growing up I always had to go to Bacolod (capital city of Negros Occ) because of school, mall hangouts, and later on work and art projects.
This piece is my witty take on those 40-minute jeepney rides to Bacolod, though I have yet to see a passenger on top. 😂
Our Piaya Afternoons l
Watercolor on 300gsm Arches
2/3 of my pieces at our DIRI SA AMON watercolor exhibit about all things Negros at 2/L North Wing, SM City Bcd. Exhibit runs till Nov19.
Negros Occ. has been known for its piaya which is now commercially sold in packs with glossy packaging. This watercolor piece however is my take on how piaya was sold and enjoyed in its simplest form back in the day in Silay.
I remember going on pasalubong errand with Lola Sayong when I was around 6. I was stoked because when you're living with siblings and you get picked to go, it means you're the CHOSEN ONE, the favored, the one who most likely brings home a toy afterwards.
The first few minutes was probably fun at the time but then we went down a route I never knew existed. It scared the crap out of me. In the end the torture was worth it coz we reached this little house that had drums (seriously, drums!) filled with freshly-made piaya! Pro: free taste. Con: no toy. 😂 Sweet memories. Hidlaw man ko kay Lola ba.😍

I wanted to showcase fun, vibrant, nostalgic thoughts of having lived in Silay City for all my life. So here I gave my #anikART take on our landmark, the San Diego Pro-Cathedral. Definitely brings back childhood memories of attending mass with my sisters. 👭

Artists are people driven by the tension between the desire to communicate and the desire to hide. - D.W. Winnicoft
Maybe this is why I am so excited and nervous all at the same time about our upcoming watercolor group exhibit. This would be my first evaaaahh and I'm just so glad to be able to share my visual diary of the sweet and splendid things in Negros together with my Tampisaw Watercolor buddies.
Here's a sneak peek of the 5 artworks I'll be displaying and selling. Hope you can join us as we open tomorrow, November 5 at SM City Bacolod. :D

Painters become storytellers as we paint in watercolor the sights, sceneries, people, marine life, human interests, and lifestyle here in our home, Negros.
