there's gon' be some stuff you gon' see//
that's gon' make it hard to smile in the future//
but through whatever you see//
through all the rain & the pain//
you gotta keep your sense of humor//
you gotta be able to smile through all this bullshit//
I owe y’all a backstory .
A month ago, a friend introduced me to Rob Lorino, a wonderful #enby & super talented photographer, who’s working on a project that explores gender beyond the binary (@beyondbinaryproject) .
Rob & I met at a local cafe. We immediately bonded. We talked for hours about their project, #transmisogyny , life on the fringes of the binary, self-portraiture as a means to express one’s #gender & the complex relationship between the photographer & their subjects .
In traditional photography, the way the photographer portrays their subject often reveals the photographer’s biases. It’s the story (& perspective) of the photographer that we often admire more than the subject itself. This can be problematic when we consider the inherent power dynamic that exists when cis hetero white folks photograph folx from marginalized communities .
As a photographer, Rob aims to minimize this dynamic by collaborating with their subjects to tell a unique & powerful visual story. They asked me to think about how I would present myself if I felt completely free to be myself. This was the look I put together .
Working with Rob was so incredible. I often feel so awkward in my body, especially when I have to pose. Modeling to show off my style has been really challenging for me because I often don’t know how to be in this body .
Working with an enby photographer helped me understand my body & my aesthetic in an entirely different & fulfilling way. I’m so used to expressing myself through words; it was a relief to have someone translate “me” to a visual form .
Photos from this shoot document the story Rob & I created together: I’m a 👾& I just landed in the woods of a very strange planet (🌎 lolz) .
The photo we chose for their project will be up soon. I can’t wait to share as it’s by far my fave .
Rob will be taking more photos for me in the future. I’m so excited about this new direction. Be prepared for more 👾looks fam ! #theinvisibletomboy#amajorqueerlook 👾
