Welcome to my first #thoughtsthursday episode! Today on the show, I talk about my personal journey dealing with an eating disorder and how I was able to overcome it all! What would a life be like if you started working for the body that YOU wanted and not what society says you SHOULD look like! Join me as I share some powerful tips and encouragement for loving the body you were given and remember, It’s never about the food!
A few highlights from this episode include: • I share my personal story surrounding dieting and body image. • How our current diet culture is affecting many of us today. • How I used food as a coping mechanism. • When I went on my first official diet at just the age of 13. • How the cycle of binge eating and purging started to ruin my life. • How I was able to get through my eating disorder. • Things I’ve done differently through pregnancy. • How I was able to reconnect with my body!
Ever find it hard to know what’s really bothering you? 🤷🏻♀️ even the most psychologically minded of us struggle with this sometimes. Ask yourself; what am I thinking about? What thoughts went through my mind when I started to feel this bad. Then ask yourself, and if that were true, what’s so bad about that? And keep asking yourself that until you have no other answer. Then start to ask yourself what a more balanced perspective would be from the absolute worst thought.

Me at 12: I think I'm #depressed
Parents: Lol, no you aren't.
Me at 14: I've talked to people diagnosed with depression, did a lot of self exploration, and even read the DSM. I'm definitely depressed.
Parents (and literally every person who is #antiselfdiagnosis ): No you aren't, you're just angsty, geez, every teenager is so dramatic! This is your fault, you're CHOOSING to be depressed. It's just a choice, not real #depression
Me at 17 and finally seeing a therapist: I've pulled through all these years thanks to the #selfdiagnosing and #mentalhealth community, I used to be #suicidal but it's dwindled. They all supported my decision to be #selfdiagnosed and gave me information, resources, and just talked when I needed it. Although, I still feel guilty about it, everyone says that people like me are "making ~real~ #mentalillness and #neurodivergent people look bad".
My Therapist: That isn't true. Not everyone has access to go to see a professional, and not everyone is even comfortable going! That's fine! You did what you needed to do in a time that you weren't able to get help, and besides, YOU know yourself best, so your diagnosis is pretty spot on. I'm glad you found such a great community, it helps those that need it when people like me can't get to them for whatever reason! (And besides, even doctors get it wrong. The difference is that when my doctor got it wrong, I was addicted to allergy medication and had fainting spells for years. When I got it wrong, I just had to adjust what coping mechanisms I used, you know, since we don't have access to medication like that?)
Anti self dxers still: Hmmmmmmmm NOPE. You're fake. Why would any REAL #psychologist or #therapist say that? That's right, they wouldn't! Stop with all your #angst and #cringe already and go get REAL help. I can afford and access it, so that means you can too! You can't possibly be mentally ill without a diagnosis, doctors are the ones who give out mental illnesses...What do you mean "studies have shown that, in fact, many teens today have depression"? LIES!!

Hi! Some of you may have noticed this account has been quiet. I have been shifting into a new area of my practice as an art therapist, counsellor and researcher over at @fat_therapist - it's a space looking at weight stigma, body image, diet culture, self-acceptance and health at every size. I have also joined forces with a brilliant art therapist and we have cofounded Insight Art Therapy which soon will be the name of this instagram! This account will be getting a lovely redesign so save what you want now 😉 you are free to stay or go, but it will still be art therapy oriented, probably more heavily so! Let me know your thoughts! Ashlee.

Alex has been committed to her rehab each week and is smashing it, that we have been able to advance her exercises at a steady pace! 💪🏽
Psychotherapists can benefit greatly from learning about, incorporating and utilizing mind-body practices themselves. Breathing with gentle movements is highly effective in self-regulation techniques that helps relieve anxiety, insomnia, improve mental focus, increase feelings of well-being, and enhance capacities for bonding, closeness, and empathy. Ariel Macon- Richard, MSW, LCSW will be at #theceuretreat presenting “Breathe” ... when i saw her slides and notes for her talk my jaw dropped ! Clearly this woman is going to bring it!🙌🏼 if just reading her notes could bring about that reaction, imagine actually witnessing her presentation! I can’t wait to hear it! Come Breathe w/ us! #breathe#mindfulness#ceu#ceus#continuingeducationunits#palmsprings#sanbernardino#riverside#lcsw#lmft#psyd
