“Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in that grey twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.”
“I want to know if you can be with joy, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.”
Oriah Mountain Dreamer, The Invitation

📍Mt. Segla. This view is only a 180 degree turn from the view in my last post. And it gets better, this is also the place that I saw the northern lights for the first time in my life. More to come on those. 😉 Mind = blown 😱 #theroadwesttraveled#norway
I'm been stuck in summer mode so to kick into fall gear we went in search of fall leaves this afternoon. 🌾🍁🍂
🤞Utah doesn't decide to skip fall completely because it's the best. Anyone else love fall as much as me? If not, what's your favorite season?
We found it completely necessary to visit four different locations to watch the same sunset. Even though the last waterfall we hit was really more of watching the moon rise than the sun set. We found the parking area completely deserted, and headed down to the upper falls in the waxing darkness. Briefly, I wondered about bears, or wolves. I patted the bear spray in my pack, hoping to never use it but grateful for its presence nonetheless.
When we reached the end of the short path, we gasped at the moonlit falls. It literally shone with the reflection of moonlight, electric bright against what had rapidly become pitch-black forest. We were completely alone in one of the most beautiful places on earth, feeling inordinately, selfishly blessed to bask in the sight without sharing. It was like a gift from the universe, just for us.
It was so bizarre to see the tropical palette of geothermal pools paired with the familiar earth tones of the mountains and prairie. I am still having trouble wrapping my brain around the juxtaposition. Thank you Yellowstone for still blowing my mind, two whole weeks after I’ve come home. 🙏
Norway, are you kidding me with this sunset? You are so magical! ✨In this moment I thought I had died and gone to heaven because this magical misty sunset seemed to last forever. What an incredible experience! #theroadwesttraveled#norway
Paul Cézanne, a late 19th century Aixois painter, was said to have bridged the gap stylistically between the ethereal impressionism of Monet and the bold flirtation with color of Matisse and Picasso.
Years ago, I lived in the south of France near the limestone mountain ridge Mont Saint-Victoire. Cézanne was obsessed with this geologic feature, recreating it on canvas countless times throughout his life in search of the perfect way to convey the sensations evoked by the stone.
100 years later, Japanese photographer Risaku Suzuki traveled to France to pay homage to both Cézanne and MSV. He produced a book of images dedicated solely to the limestone range, commenting that you never returned to the same mountain twice, as the light from any given weather system reflected differently off of Victoire’s facade.
Looking at my photos from the Indian Peaks, it’s easy to see how one could dedicate their life to chasing the perfect recreation of a mountain range. I visited two weeks ago, and then again this past weekend. It’s remarkable how much has changed in that short window; how I can barely recognize the landscape when the water level changed and the sunrise palette slightly skewed.
I am compelled to revisit often, to study how light interacts with our surroundings, how every day, every moment, is a new one despite taking place in a familiar setting.
If you see more of this beautiful, pristine place over time....don’t say I didn’t warn ya!
“One of these days I want to do like you guys… hike up the thing and ski it.” Big thanks to Former Geneva Basin Ski Patroller Lee Olinger for speaking to us about his memories of Geneva. 2 months and I still can't believe this perfect happy baby is ours. He loves his mom, mornings, the boob juice, "Craving you"- Thomas Rhett, when dad presses his nose and makes robot noises, and he loves being outside. He's not a fan of Velcro, not being able to sing with mom (he tries hard) and when mom doesn't pay him attention. We love our Summit!!
The pursuit of your passion will spark the flame of happy soul. -Lailah Akita
After graduating college I was working a job that didn't make me happy. It was slowly draining me and I needed a change. When change came I had to decide between happiness and money. I could've taken an Executive Assistant position to one of the head haunchos of the hospital. My salary would've been more than twice what I currently made, and that kind of money was super tempting. I tried to convince myself the money would out weigh my dislike of the job. But I knew deep down doing something I loved would be way better than a big pay check. So in the end I turned down the 8-5 fancy pants job and took a job in the ER. And I love my job, it's hard to beat getting to help save people's lives. The schedule also makes me real happy because it has allowed me to spend the majority of my time traveling, outdoors on adventures, and doing Search and Rescue. I've never regretted my decision because money can't buy happiness.
This sunset lasted for hours on end. We just sat in the beach and watched as the sun slowly dipped below the horizon ever changing then colors in the sky. When darkness finally arrived, so did the Northern Lights. Sleep was scarce while we were in Norway. #TheRoadWestTraveled @theroadwesttraveled
We've got our road trip hats on. We're ready. If only the Stetson puppy dog got the selfie memo 🤠🐕 -

"There's no such thing as someone else's war. Your creature comforts aren't the only things worth fighting for." - Jason Isbell
Call me obsessed I don't mind, somehow Jason's songs fit with Wyoming for me. Even if a ton are about the south, it's like a melding of the two in my mind.

“Magic is always pushing and drawing and making things out of nothing. Everything is made out of magic, leaves and trees, flowers and birds, badgers and foxes and squirrels and people. So it must be all around us. In this garden - in all the places.”

If you woke up in a campsite ya accidentally stole, you’re in a state ya didn’t mean to go to, and you’d trade your right foot for a cup of hot coffee....why not just jump in the river at sunrise, too? It’s only a melted glacier. Live a little, kid. ❄️☕️
