#TheSaffronTales take two! Made it to Kalustyan’s tonight for the Real Deal Persian Saffron & dried mint (thanks for the tip!!). Cooked up a Persian New Year’s dish for ours - mixed herb rice with baked salmon, shirazi salad, yogurt with cucumber & dill.

Tonight I embarked on #TheSaffronTales - a Christmas gift from Jake where I attempt to cook Persian food & he gets to enjoy it &/or laugh at me. Persian Rice up first (duh) & hey, not bad. Need a crispier ~tahdig~ next time but at least I didn’t burn it?!!!! (P.S. he isn’t even home, I did this alone in case it was a disaster, leading half of his genes to become ashamed of me.) Onto the next one!

Candles, pomegranates & the book of Hafez can only mean one thing - Iranians are getting all witchy & celebrating the winter solstice. In Iranian culture, the winter solstice is known as Shab-e Yalda, a time for celebrating light over darkness. We gather to feast, drink and read poetry late into the night, eating winter fruits such as pomegranates (obviously) as their red colour symbolises the crimson hue of the sun at dawn after the longest night of the year. So here's to new beginnings and a new cycle around the sun ☀️

More #homecooking from the Saffron Tales cookbook. These are Bandari fishcakes (kuku-ye mahi). The only change I made was that the recipe calls for a tamarind and date sauce where as I made a less sweet #yoghurt, #chive and preserved lemon one instead. The base of the #fishcakes are #potatoes and #whitefish and  they are packed with Persian spices: #cumin #coriander #parsley #turmeric #fenugreekleaves #garlic #cayanne and #lemonzest. Another recipe from The Saffron Tales cookbook. This is a yoghurt cake with poached peaches. I'd never heard of a yoghurt cake before, but it is super moist and could not be easier to make. There is lemon zest as well as lemon juice in the cake. The recipe called for figs, but we had peaches in the fridge so I used them instead. They are poached in honey, rose syrup and sugar. Healthy is not synonymous with boring!! Delicious is not synonymous with complicated!! 😝😝😝 I recently bought a new cookbook called #TheSaffronTales which gives a beautiful illustration of Persian dishes. I'm not particularly adventurous when it comes to every day cooking; I like to make food that is QUICK and EASY to accommodate my schedule! But, in an effort to try new things and to purposely incorporate more veggies in my diet, I tried some basic recipes out- and they were a big hit. Pictured: watermelon with mint & feta, cucumber/onion/tomato/radish salad, and Greek yogurt with beets, garlic & walnuts (don't knock it till you try it). All mixed quickly and with no heat preparation, making these recipes healthy and accessible for people who may not have access to a stove, etc. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 (there's also some prosciutto on the plate, because cured meats are my favorite 😍). Moral of the story: new things can add some much needed variety into your diet & can still be realistic in terms of time, cost, and energy. Also, I highly recommend that cookbook, esp if you're looking to add more vegetarian (or just VEGETABLE) dishes into your life!
