I think we’re all guilty of just powering through when we feel exhausted and at the point of burn out, cause we don’t want to let anyone down. But in reality your not going to be any good to anyone if you can’t think straight, or are unwell yourself! So if your feeling pants, take time to rest. You are NOT QUITTING!

I’d like to turn your attention to our fantastic digital world that we live in. Everything we do revolves around digital living. If we’re so keen on detoxing what we put into our body and how we treat our body, I think equal attention should be paid to these digital devices. Do we control them or do they control us? 
Digital detox can massively reduce anxiety and depression, all those WhatsApp messages/txt messages stimulate a great dopamine release, making us feel great! But this eventually turns into pleasure seeking behaviour. Checking your phone the whole time. 
Im not saying completely eradicate your phone and laptop from your life, but maybe for one evening try putting your phone onto airplane mode. See how you feel without it. 
After a particularly bad shift at work I turn my phone to airplane mode for a couple of hours, therefore knowing I’m not going to be distracted and I can have some me time, have a bit of a stimulus reset.

Another long day and it’s pouring out here on my walk back to the car.
~ as part of the #30daysofwellness, ive been thinking about how our own wellness affects those around us. When your at work constantly with no time even to yourself, it can be tricky to make sure others are included. So this evening I’m going to take time dedicated to my other half,sit, talk and have a tasty pudding! (Sweet tooth is my weakness!)
When you have been around other people all day, looking after other people it can sometimes make you inwardly express your emotions and your feelings, but don’t! Talk to your friends, family, partner, husband, wife! 😌
~others around you will react positively when you feel better about yourself and how your feeling. 😬😬 so spend some time with your family, friends, partners! 
Turn your phone off, tv off, and enjoy their company πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

Whether it be the time limit or distance, it’s instinctive to track our exercise. Living healthily has just as much (if not more) to do with what we put into our bodies, so why don’t we do it with our food?! My theory is that people think that tracking macronutrients leads to boring, unimaginative meals - but that simply doesn’t have to be true!

As I said on the previous post, thewellnessmedic is expanding! Not just in the UK but to ever further afield. 
That’s right, we’re planning on hosting an event in Sydney, Australia in 2018! 
Our associate director living and working as a Doctor in Sydney has commented on how much wellness and health of doctors is a huge focus, we decided it would be a great place for us to launch thewellnessmedic! I’ve been told that in one hospital the junior doctors are given a vegetable patch to look after, and morning walks down the Beach! DREAMY!🐟 πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘‹πŸ»
We’re planning our first event March 2018, and guess what WERE LOOKING FOR SPEAKERS! πŸŽ‰
If you live in Sydney or near Sydney and want to help healthcare professionals realise the importance of looking after themselves in all aspects of our lives then do get in contact! That’s right, we’re planning on hosting an event in Sydney, Australia in 2018! 
Our associate director living and working as a Doctor in Sydney has commented on how much wellness and health of doctors is a huge focus, we decided it would be a great place for us to launch thewellnessmedic! I’ve been told that in one hospital the junior doctors are given a vegetable patch to look after, and morning walks down the Beach! DREAMY!🐟 πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘‹πŸ»

This popped up on my feed yesterday from @thelifecurrency and thought it was an interesting thought. 
When you think of success you’ve had in your life, I’m pretty sure a lot of that has been achieved through hard hard work and determination. Am I right? I know that I am not a natural scientist of biologist and that at medical school things didn’t come to me naturally, I had to work insanely hard to understand and get to grips with all the knowledge to achieve the success of completing medical school finals. And in more recent years, my ED exams.
I think that yes people can be gifted at certain things definitely! But without the hard work, that gift is never used! 
As @gemmahawkey said so brilliantly in her talk last week, when you see that other person β€œperfect” and who has everything, don’t compare yourselves to them! Go out and do it for yourself, work hard and you will so enjoy the rewards! But ps- make sure to take some time out too 😌✨

Event seems to have gone well, 😬😬😌 exams are done, unfortunately @sebkern is away surfing for the week so I decided to take myself away for the weekend to @ashdownparkhotel and am taking myself out for an amazing dinner. 
It’s really important to get that metime in, and I value it a lot!  As @thefoodmedic said, it’s important to have those independent times, even if people look at you a bit funny and ask β€œjust one for dinner”, but I really enjoy it every now and again!

Such an inspiring and brilliant talk. We all think we’re too busy to eat well, we feel more tired, we feel less motivated to be healthy. It’s a vicious cycle. STOP IT! Eat well, eat to look after your body and the rest will fall into place. You will feel more energised, sleep better, have better mood.

How many of you when having a busy day don’t have time to eat, stop, have a drink or even really breathe?? I’m pretty sure most people in all walks of life can agree with the above πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ‘‹πŸ»
I recently spoke to a group of medical students about how I’ve coped with stress as a doctor and how I cope at work. One of my top tips is when you do have one of those β€œmental” days where everything is happening, take just even 16 seconds to try this mindful breathing exercise.

It brings you back to normality and gives you that bit of reset. The best place I find to do this can even be in the store room when you have to grab something or even when you pop to the loo! 🚽🚰 πŸ˜† grab any opportunity you can! ~

Hope you enjoyed your extra hour in bed with the clocks going back πŸ‘πŸ» hopefully it won’t be so pitch black in the mornings now! I’ve been taken down by the flu lurgy which means I haven’t been able to do the long list of things I have had planned for the weekend! But today I’m going to not feel guilty about that and RELAX! Have a cup of coffee in bed and recharge the batteries. ~
Again I go back to our electronic devices, you wouldn’t think of using them, taking them out without charging them. Cause they won’t work! We’re exactly the same, if you don’t let yourself recharge your just going to run out of power.

I am a fully qualified nutritionist and have recently completed my MSc in nutrition and eating disorders at UCL London. ~Having had difficulties whilst growing up with food and body image perception, I am extremely passionate about combining my knowledge of both nutrition and eating disorders to help and encourage individuals to peruse a healthy relationship with food and to focus their attention on their health and not the number on the scales. ~I promote a non restrictive diet that puts emphasis on healthy and well balanced meals that contribute to optimal health.

With this extreme weather we’ve been having it can be easy to hide indoors, ignore those exercises, become a bit of a hermit! Part of me getting some perspective and relaxing is to go for a walk, get some fresh air! Which can be tricky when you get blown over with the wind outside. ~it looks like Brian is saying his farewells this morning, although still a little moody! So after this weekend of long days I’m planning my week around activities for getting outside!! ~whether that be walking, running, cycling anything! Just get yourself out in that fresh air, we spend too much time from Office - Car- Home. So this week I’m going to count my time I spend outside! ~let me know how you guys get on! ~How many of you get to the weekend/ day off/ hour off and can’t think straight? Your mind is still going a million miles an hour thinking about different things? I definitely have this! And it takes me a while to unwind after a shift/week as my brain tries to sift through all the thoughts in my head.
~ I love this quote of β€œmy brain has too many tabs open”, it’s such a great way of describing that feeling of all those thoughts and worries just sitting there in your mind not allowing you to think clearly. At the recent RCEM conference, there was an oral presentation focussing on this and how to deal with trauma (personal) in the ED.
~ we declutter our tabs on our computer, phone cause it runs the battery low and makes the phone run slower. So why don’t we make time to close our own tabs? In order to make our own minds run faster and keep our batteries going longer? ~ Why don’t you write down these β€œtabs” see what they are and try and get rid of some of them? ~ let me know if you’ve got any tips/tricks And I’ll share them with our fellow wellnessmedics!

Another long day and it’s pouring out here on my walk back to the car.
~ as part of the #30daysofwellness, ive been thinking about how our own wellness affects those around us. When your at work constantly with no time even to yourself, it can be tricky to make sure others are included. So this evening I’m going to take time dedicated to my other half,sit, talk and have a tasty pudding! (Sweet tooth is my weakness!)
When you have been around other people all day, looking after other people it can sometimes make you inwardly express your emotions and your feelings, but don’t! Talk to your friends, family, partner, husband, wife! 😌
~others around you will react positively when you feel better about yourself and how your feeling. 😬😬 so spend some time with your family, friends, partners!

Even though I only had a couple of hours off work, teaching this pm I felt guilty I was taking time for myself, enjoying a meeting with friends, looking round the shops, NORMAL THINGS! Why is this so? It’s probably why none of us actually take time for ourselves cause we feel guilty about it. Myself included! ~

Great chats with @thefoodmedic and @missnutritionist. ~ Even though I only had a couple of hours off work, teaching this pm I felt guilty I was taking time for myself, enjoying a meeting with friends, looking round the shops, NORMAL THINGS! Why is this so? It’s probably why none of us actually take time for ourselves cause we feel guilty about it. Myself included! ~ Im going to start doing my Art Gallery days again, phone off/ gallery visits and enjoy! If anyone has any gallery suggestions do send them across. Whether it be the time limit or distance, it’s instinctive to track our exercise. Living healthily has just as much (if not more) to do with what we put into our bodies, so why don’t we do it with our food?! My theory is that people think that tracking macronutrients leads to boring, unimaginative meals - but that simply doesn’t have to be true!

What great news this morning, in NZ they have passed a new amendment to their Hippocratic oath which incorporates the wellbeing of doctors. Amazing work from Sam Hazeldine! Such an important aspect of your medical training, learning how to take care of yourself! I’m the first to say I definitely did not make this a priority at medical school nor in my first few years as a doctor but have realised the massive importance this has and think it should be incorporated into medical training as much as all the other knowledge we must learn. 
I’m going to add this to my own Hippocratic oath, let’s try and instil this into medical students from an early get go!

I myself have suffered with anxiety and burnout from work, and it’s not easy! But once you overcome that difficulty in telling someone it makes it all so much easier! So support each other, talk to someone you trust and have a cuppa tea and a hobnob! 😌❀️
Something I’ve been thinking about recently is how when we’re stressed and feeling overwhelmed it’s so easy to fall into easy, old habits. Things that don’t challenge us or cause us to change our thought process. Where as actually, your mind needs the opposite! It wants something new, or something to distract it from that that is stressing you out. 
I want you to try it this week, start something new! πŸŽ‰ whether that be going for a walk after work everyday, walking a new way home. Changing your evening routine, repaint that room you’ve wanted to do for ages. Use the stress as a motivator to start something new. Let’s see if we can dissipate some of that anxiety and stress into something positive :) Let me know how you get along, I absolutely love all the messages about how all you Medics are using self help and simple ways to help your wellbeing 😬😬😬 Have an amazing Tuesday! πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€βš•οΈ

Here’s what she has to say to help us medics:) Hi this is Mary, and I am a future dermatologist. I love sports, nutritious food and a practice what I preach with healthy lifestyle and living. Therefore it is possible! 
My favourite workout to fit in around work is TABATA. Has anyone heard about that? 
It’s a HIIT (20β€œ exercise, 10β€œ rest) and you have to repeat it 8 times (4min) without a break. 
Perform Bodyweight exercises like burpees or squat jumps. 
Repeat the 4min for 4-5 times with different exercises, reach for Your own limit and give it all! 
It’s the best workout to perform before or after a busy workday!
