Dance for me was never about just moving or trying to get a movement right. Yes, these are very important features that a dancer must have but there is so much more that dance offers. Belly dance opened the doors for me to understand the gendered perspective of history, culture, society and people.
My next showcase is about what is popularly called "belly dance". Safar-e-raqs is a journey of some of the historical characters who have shaped what we see and know as belly dance. This dance showcase was a small research project I had done as a part of my training under @mirabetz I cannot thank her enough to push me to become a thinking dancer.
Safar-e-raqs will debut on 21st January, 2018 at @alliancefrancaise Bangalore, India. Watch this space for more updates ❤
I remember my biology professor in college telling us in a lecture that multitasking is biologically impossible...I distinctly remember this moment because I was about to open up Facebook on my laptop because I assumed I could both scroll through Facebook and listen to AND learn from her at the same time...turns out I couldn’t.
Yet here’s the thing, on the daily, we are expected to and attempt to multi-task. I wonder how much quality is lost during multi-tasking? If I just focus wholly on one task, won’t I complete it to the best of my ability instead of being consumed with twenty other things at the same time? For me it comes back to the idea of exhaustion being a status symbol. It’s hard to let go of that. So often I talk with people and it seems like we’re all trying to out exhaust one another. When I catch myself doing this I actually ask...is that true? I actually work really hard to be happy and healthy and well rested...but somehow that’s not cool.
Well fuck being cool, I’m gonna go get my 8 hours.
Easier said than done...but worth having a think about.

'Healthy Snacks and H2O"
Fuelling your body correctly is absolutely key for ensuring you make the most of every class. Having a small healthy snack before class such as a banana, an apple, some crackers with cheese or a fresh fruit smoothie will give your body adequate fuel to tackle the class ahead AND help with your focus and concentration. Avoid sugary snacks, fizzy drinks and anything too salty which will give you an energy slump and make you feel dehydrated. During class you must drink lots of water- (should I look at getting water bottles made?) to keep you hydrated and your muscles healthy. Keep drinking plenty after class as well to flush your body of toxins, and have another small snack- fruit, raisins, some ham- protein and potassium based foods are particularly helpful for recovery after exercise! Stick to these steps and your body will be in the right state to get the most from your training! ❤️🖤🦊 #foxacademyofdance#healthydancers#thinkingdancers#eatwell#dancelessons#danceschool#improvingdancers#stowmarket#greatfinborough
Little drops of water make the ocean. .

"Okay, I want to try," she says in this picture.|| Because this is what happens after you discuss AT LENGTH the importance of speaking up in class with your dancers.
Because you are tired of the ways girls are silenced, silence themselves and are taught that this is their lot.
Because #BalletHaven is #morethanjustafterschool "activity" and "busy-ness". Because we are a training ground for girls to be #empowered , #emboldened and heard.
Because standing up for yourself in LIFE starts with being willing to let yourself hear your own voice first.
