Enchanted. My trip to Kripalu in the Berkshires was bursting with vitality, sweetness and fun. I learned so much from prolific writer Thomas Moore in the three days I spent with him.
The yoga classes were delicious and the yogadance with the live drumming...well, I will have to write an entire story to describe the energy and vitality of that experience.
I was surprised by unexpected tickets to a rockin' concert at Tanglewood and delighted to connect and make friends with new people.
This trip truly was an example of #careofthesoul .

You can delight in the effervescence of its maturity." from Thomas Moore's, Dark Nights of the Soul. This book has been my guide of late. Moore's words have always resonated with me, but this time they have pierced my heart. I often look to nature, and plants specifically, as they can be the best of teachers. Moore's allegory has been planted in my heart as I continue to surrender, let go, allow.
For years I've had this red bracelet that to most people wouldn't mean anything to. I remember my mother weari g it all the time when I was little and never knew the meaning of it till I was older and she told me about Thomas Moore. Once she stopped wearing it she gave it to me. This litter red bracelet is a reminder to myself that our freedom isn't free and it's men like Thomas Moore died for that freedom. Today I was able to check off one thing off my bucket list, to see his name on the Vietnam memorial wall. The cross next to his name is because he is still missing, he has never been found. I've had the honor to talk to his daughter a few years back to let her know he will never be forgotten, I will tell my boys about him and hand down this red bracelet to them.
"The female body is resilient" - I once heard a grand-aunt comment after my cousin had a spontaneous abortion. I still remember standing below the staircase amidst my younger cousins, as we were not allowed to visit her, who up-to that point had been a fun-loving part of our childhoods, teaching us how to climb trees and create mischief with twigs, stones and our imaginations. As we continued our individual journeys through childhood this elder cousin of hours first shifted cities then countries. None of us are in-touch anymore but what I felt then, came rushing back to me when I saw this image. Through the #monstrousfeminine artist #jessicaledwich creates these images that speak to the rituals of beauty and body that women engage in, here it's a "burnt" body as a result of a tanning bed - how is this similar in mind to that episode in my childhood? It is the idea of self-immolation, in Ledwich's work here - its of a physical nature, for my cousin it was both a physical and emotional scarring. She had supposedly "failed" at womanhood, of being a mother - and as she waded through the fires of doubt there were no women to soothe her, they were simply there to isolate her and create barriers to comfort. If that isn't monstrous I don't know what is! As I write this I send her healing and a prayer that she hasn't lost her softness, a strength that can cut through the thickest, heaviest and darkest burns. I leave you with a question - who are the women in your lives that make you strong ? 유월은 강렬한 미망의 경험이나 기억이 없어서 그런지 열두달 중에 존재력이 미약해 보여 곁달같은 느낌이다.
내가 유월을 잘못 살았나?
지나가는 골목 담장에 장미가 만발했길래 얼굴을 가까이 들이 밀고 쳐다 보니.
겉잎부터 시들기 마련인데 꽃잎 몇개 떼어낸 들 장미의 가치가 훼손되지는 않겠더라.
한 절반 정도 떨어져 나가야 사위었음을 알겠거늘.
그래도 여름의 끝자락엔 어차피 사라지겠지.
유월의 장미를 노래한 로버트 번즈의 시가 생각난다. 노래가 더 유명하지만.

As I look at this image again and again all I see is a dystopian reality where body has become beyond object to a "prototype" for something "more". Its purpose is constantly being Re-purposed to fit an ideal that is as illusory in form as Thomas Moore's Utopia. From the series #monstrousfeminine by artist #jessicaledwich I share with you 3of21 from my #21DaysofFeministArt for my #dsartquotes series for #dsarttakes and #artfromus . There are two aspects to my ascribing the phrase "Self-Improvement" to this image. The first is facile - it seemed apt with the neck-nuts-bolts and screwdriver to play with the DIY and "Home Improvement" trope, which are predominantly seen as masculine hobbies and turn it into an internal, meditative process such as "Self Improvement". The second aspect stems from where the first ends, and that is the idea that Self Improvement is a spiritual quest of the "self". It is through introspection, quietude and investigating ALL things internal that we begin to find our place in the external world. Here the image and text are jarring for we are faced with an endeavour that is purely physical. Coming back to the prototype idea - where the body can be anything for anyone designed in anyway - is it freedom or entrapment? That answer is for each one of us as men and women to define for ourselves. But remember that tattoos, piercings, female circumcision and bionic arms and legs all exist at differing points on that same spectrum.
