Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Tim Burton, 2007)
Perhaps Burton at both his bloodiest and most macabre. After 15 years of exile, barber Benjamin Barker returns to London after being falsely imprisoned by a corrupt judge who listed for Barber's wife. Assuming the pseudonym of Sweeney Todd, he soon begins to wreak a trail of bloody vengeance with the help of the equally ghoulish Mrs Lovett, leading them on a path of death, passion and... pies. Adapting Steven Sondheim's acclaimed musical of the same name was apparently something of a passion project for Burton after he first saw it performed in the 1980's, and to date it remains Sondheim's only screen adaptation which he approves of. It cinematically plays out like a dark blend of Dickens and Hammer horror, with Burton employing his full technical mastery. Of course a musical is as only good as its songs, with Sondheim's iconic numbers being as darkly comedic and romantic ever, buoyed by the fantastic central performances. Depp looks and acts the part of tortured gothic as the titular character, but Helena Bonham Carter is by far the best part as the viciously mischievous Mrs Lovett. Burton has adapted a property he very clearly loves, simultaneously doing justice to Sondheim's original, as well as bringing his flair and panache to create a gore-soaked comedic tragedy of his own making. #film#cinema#movie#classicfilm#filmmaking#filmblog#filmcollection#filmoftheday#filmreview#filmposter#filmtime#sweeneytodd#timburton#2007#johnnydepp#helenabonhamcarter#alanrickman#timothyspall#sachabaroncohen#horror#drama#romance#tragedy#musical#blackcomedy#stephensondheim
