I’m one of those (self indulgent) people that likes to sort through my emotions like a miner in a cave. Picking up each rock, holding it to the light; naming each emotion, giving it time to breathe.
So, when I say that I am shocked that I didn’t know what homesickness felt like, please, believe me. I moved far away from home 12 years ago. And a lot happened between age 21 and 33. I thought I knew all of my emotions. 
It turns out, though, that I had buried the most basic of emotions: the sense of home. Of peace. Of calm. Everything-in-its-right-place.
I’m here in Texas now, and every other place I’ve lived feels years away. 
I’m here now. Not going anywhere. Eating homemade fig newtons that are so f*cking delicious, they blow my mind. They’re loads better than store-bought ones right out of the oven, but after they sit out for a day and a thin crust develops on the top? HEAVEN. 
I can’t believe how good these cookies are. I mean, I sorta can, because the recipe is from @testkitchen, and their recipes are always life-changing.
I’m working on typing this recipe up for you guys right now, and I hope to have it posted before midnight. 
Love you (still). This is hard, but it’s also what freedom feels like.

Next up in our Halloween breakfast repertoire, a Mummy! This was super fun to make, even though slicing the apple for the bandages took longer in reality than it did in my head when I was laying in bed this am thinking about it 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️Anywho, this guy was made out of French toast sticks, believe it or not, and I layered some bacon over it because 1. Bacon and 2. My son (like his Mama) likes a bit of a sweet/salty combo. Ian didn’t nap until 4 and I ended up waking him at 5:45 so we could eat. He demanded an apple, so I threw these veggies and quinoa bread on too. Sweet potato and kabocha squash for him, carrots and asparagus added to mine (no quinoa).

I call this a “I don’t know what to make for dinner, I need to go grocery shopping, clean your fridge out bowl”. Lol. I had a little left over brown rice and cauliflower rice, some roasted veggies, and some roasted chicken. Mix it all together... yum! Super simple, it probably took 5 minutes to warm everything up and throw it together. •

This is a recipe from a very talented old friend of mine, @analuisaares! 😘 Thanks Ana! 😚 It’s delicious, packed with vegetables, simple to make and you can freeze for another day! Here is what you need: 1 garlic clove crushed, 1 small onion finely chopped, 1 courgette finely chopped, 1 aubergine finely chopped, 1 red pepper and 1 yellow pepper finely chopped and salt and oregano to taste. Add to a large frying pan 3 tbsp of olive oil and sauté the garlic and onion until they start to soften. Add all other ingredients and let them cook until soften to your taste. I like it a little bit crunchy. 😋 You can eat this with couscous or any other way you like. This is snack this morning. Store muffins used to be one of my "off-limits" foods. All I thought was, trans-fats! Too many calories!

Now I couldn't care less. I know there is a place for all foods. By trying to restrict certain food, it always made me want them more. Then when I got them, I would eat more than I actually wanted. Restriction causes binging!
.
That's what our brain does when we restrict (aka diet). When we eat too little calories, fat, or not the foods we want, our brain goes into "feast or famine" mode. Our brain literally makes us crave high-fat high-caloric food because it is trying to save up stores for the famine we are inducing upon ourselves. And this isn't just happening if we completely starve ourselves. Studies show this alteration of brain chemistry making us crave more food happens at just 1500 calories/day. Much more than some diets on the market today. Dieting literally makes us crazy.

And so you know, my daughter didn't eat the oranges. She threw them onto my husband's plate. I'll try them again later.

Grace is switching to a new daycare where the kids eat with silverware starting at 12 months 😳 (<— an actual depiction of my face when they told us that at orientation last week)! So just like that the holidays are upon us. Here’s an activity to keep them busy for a while; spread beetroot hummus for pink “frosting” and sweet potato hummus for orange “frosting” onto rice cakes. Then decorate with healthy toppings such as sunflower seeds, pomegranate jewels, raisins, currants or any other sprinkle worthy foods you have in your cupboard. Disclaimer: This could get messy!!!

Baby girl is still so sick. 😔 Makes our parent hearts so sad to see her not acting like her cheery self. She at least did get some dance wiggles in to Little Baby Bum this morning though. 😊

Obviously her appetite is low, and I want something quick that doesn’t take time away from her. So Daily Sunshine for her and Shakeology for me. At least she’s getting SOMETHING in her system and also hydrating. 🌱💦

And the fact that is has pea, apple, sweet potato, flaxseed, spinach, strawberry, beet, banana, cherry, and blueberry and sunflower oil in it makes me feel good. All organic, none of the junk, and some fuel to help heal her little body. ❤️

Naptime hustle is happening, and I am cleaning, meal planning, checking into my groups, and finally getting into my inbox to answer your messages! Clearly I’m behind with most of my recent time being spent snuggling her! ☺️

Getting my girls to eat while traveling is like asking a turtle to sprint. Hopeless. Fruit is my best bet to get food in them after a long travel day, spending 10+ hours in the sky. It takes time for our systems to adjust so we will rely on reserves for a few days. And coffee. 😁
