I wasn't sure my phone would capture anything worthwhile of the eclipse. I was pleasantly surprised that the bokeh created by the sun worked just like a pin hole camera!

Friday, August 18th ✨the day I shifted into a new reality, because of the choice to act immediately on an intuitive hit
.
Just two days fresh back to LA from a road trip to Portland -- while sitting in the sun at my dining table basking in total rest -- I was filled with steady, direct intuitive direction: Drive back North to see the solar eclipse in totality
.
I was on the road nearly immediately, the back of my SUV stacked with pillows & blankets, a cooler & my favorite hiking boots
.
It wasn't until midway between Los Angeles & Las Vegas that I stopped to actually consider my plan. The route, the end destination, the duration of the trip..
.
I nearly lost my nerve. Started questioning the logic of my choice
.
So i did what I always do when I need advice.. I phoned @stacykeck & without hesitation she said.. 'Keep going. You're on an adventure..'
.
And so I kept going.. through the desert, the high desert, the Great Basin, past the Playa, along the twists of the Snake River, past Boise, into the Oregon Outback, up and into the crystal clear waters of Lake Tahoe, and finally through the pre-dawn mist veiling Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite
.
Basically.. a fairytale trip through heaven on earth guided only by how I felt every moment. No agenda. Just following a feeling
.
A week later as I drove back into LA, I had finally given over to a years-long pull to move away from the beach & perpetual sunshine, to make my home in an area bursting with trees and the smell of moist earth & fresh rain
.
Today, this morning, just a bit over 5 weeks after that first choice to follow an intuitive feeling up to Oregon to watch the eclipse, I'm just 1 week out from my last night here in this bed, my bedroom, this house..
.
And I'll tell you.. I've never felt more tuned in, joyful, confident, self-assured or full of love than I have over these past 35 days or so
.
I have no idea what is in store. But I have learned this.. the more I commit to a daily practice of relaxing back into the Source energy flowing through my body the more proof I encounter that we can hold unconditional trust in a base nature of well-being
.

Also, I have a few paintings I’d like to sell! These were inspired by the solar eclipse last month. I still can’t believe I had the opportunity to experience it in the totality. I don’t think I’ll ever forget and I’ll be chasing these until I die! Direct Message me if interested. Also, check out my art and photography specific account: @crescenttalesart

Background stars observed during total eclipse

I hesitate to post this in light of the incredible photos by Druckmuller, but it is nevertheless a pretty interesting shot of the eclipse and surrounding star field. This is a blend of 13 shots separated by 1 stop each. In order to bring out the slight differences between tone levels, I resorted to calibrating all of the light frames by subtracting master bias and dark frames (averaged for the same exposure time), then dividing by a master flat for the f/8, the aperture used in the 13 shots. The HDR composition was assembled in PixInsight using HDRComposition and the detail was extracted using non-linear stretch routines MaskedStrech and MultistageMedianTransform (a wavelet based routine that separates the image into layers based on spatial scale). After all that, done in a 64bit computational space, I had to make an 8 bit JPEG for IG (creating some posterization) and did adjust the highlights to enhance the stars so some of the innermost corona is slightly blown.
There are over 20 stars detected in the original file, (the faintest being HD 87391, magnitude 9.47). The relative positions of the stars with respect to the center of the sun is a test of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. He predicted that the gravitational field from a massive body like the sun warps space-time and that rays of light passing near the sun would be deflected toward the sun as they pass. So the test is to measure the relative positions of the stars during a total eclipse (when you can see them) and compare their apparent positions measured six months later (when you can see them at night and the sun is no longer nearby). This was first done by the astronomer Arthur Eddington on May 29, 1919 using glass photographic plates and a telescope, and the results agreed with Einstein’s prediction. It would be hard to repeat this experiment with this and subsequent images to be made at night since the plate scale of 2.4 arc sec per pixel and low SNR are marginal to see the less than one arcsec change at these star positions. At some point I will post pictures on my website and make them available for download.

Diamond Ring - Of course instinct took over and I just had to capture it with multiple cameras while juggling my Solar Eclipse glasses. I realize I sound like an idiot, but I was glad to look at my pictures and videos afterwards and see that I successfully captured it. If I ever make a movie of the whole experience I will have to dub over my annoying voice with heavenly music.

"My" photo of totality. Despite a failure of my remote camera control app, which only saved Jpeg images of most of the eclipse, instead of the Raw files I was expecting, I was able to make them work. This image is a composite of 7 images taken by two photographers (my brother-in-law Greg and me) in two different locations on different brand cameras with different focal lengths, sensor sizes and different resolutions. It required a bit of processing to get this image.

At our location, because we were away from the center line of totality, we only had a minute and 42 seconds of totality. It went amazingly fast.

Behold! This progression of the partial solar eclipse took place over Ross Lake, in Northern Cascades National Park, Washington on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017. A total solar eclipse swept across the path of totality, a narrow portion of the contiguous United States from Lincoln Beach, Oregon, to Charleston, South Carolina. A partial solar eclipse was visible across the entire North American continent along with parts of South America, Africa, and Europe.

Hello again, it's @hookphotos.

I'd first like to thank @universetoday for contacting me and allowing me to takeover their page for the day. Universe Today and their featured photographers have constantly inspired me to visit new destinations and capture moments under the stars.
For my 3rd and final astrophotograph of the day, I'd like to share with you all a composite. I took both of these photographs a day apart at the same location. For the recent Total Solar Eclipse, I traveled north to Oregon. This was my first trip to the state and first time viewing a Total Solar Eclipse. I was of course planning to be somewhere in the Line of Totality. I arrived in the state 5 days early and was welcomed by wildfires in Southern and Central Oregon. I had to change my location plans and hope I could find a clear sky viewing location. Luckily after a couple days of scouting weather and talking to locals, someone suggested I try Smith Rock State Park. I arrived at the location Saturday, Hiked, and photographed the park (this is when I captured the foreground image of a hiker on the rim of the cliff), then scouted weather Sunday morning, all was good. The morning of the eclipse I woke up in mar car outside the gate to a line of cars. Entered, Parked, and Hiked up Misery Trail to the top of the State park, along with over a hundred others. Totality was amazing to say the least. I captured a series of shots with 3 cameras. More photos in my gallery (@hookphotos). After seeing photographs others had taken at the same park, I was inspired to create a composite of a hiker and the eclipse. Thus this image was created.

The road trip and eclipse was a life changing experience. Oregon is now engulfed in wildfires and I hope all is resolved shortly.

Hey Guys!
Are you ready for the big shift September 22 2017 ? #AutumEquinox ✨As you may know, there is an Equinox coming up on September 22nd. With this Equinox, we will be feeling quite different but it is nothing to be afraid of. This Equinox will be the turning point of the year and marked when the Sun shifts into Libra. Libra, in case you didn’t know, is a sign that for the most part revolves around finding balance and learning to live in harmony with others. It is a sign that helps us to look at life from a more compassionate view. To sum it all up, this is a sign that encourages us to be the best versions of ourselves we can be. As the Sun shifts into #Libra on this #Equinox, we will be experiencing a lot of new things. During this time there will be a huge shift in #energy. While we are used to these shifts, this one will be more focused on allowing our goals to meet their full potential. This will be a hard energy shift for Mother Nature as she is still sorting through all the energy she absorbed during the #TotalSolarEclipse that made its way across the United States. As this Equinox happens we will be invited to balance ourselves out and find the middle ground that we have been needing for quite some time. We will be forced to take the good things with the bad and while some of this will be hard to accept we do not have any other choice. The Universe will not push something on you that you cannot handle and you need to remember that above all else. Of course, we will all be slowing down during this energy shift and while balance will be found, we will also be given the time we need to breathe and Mother Nature (or Mother Earth) will be able to recover even if just for a moment. As we are moving closer to the final months of 2017 we will be dealing with everything that we have been putting off and our new truth will become our reality. This Equinox will soften even the most masculine being.Trust your inner voice and embrace all that is to come. This will feel a bit draining and odd, to begin with, but once you get where you need to be, things will settle down. et things simmer down and allow yourself to flow right into where you need to be.
As the Sun shifts into #Libra  on this #Equinox , we will be experiencing a lot of new things. During this time there will be a huge shift in #energy . #BlackHoleSun I can't believe it has already been a month today since I witnessed the Total Solar Eclipse. This photo is the closest to what I saw during totality. As beautiful as this photo is, it does not compare to what was experienced in person. It was like being in the presence of God. Those 2 minutes have been the best in my life so far! After seeing the total #solareclipse my friend and I drove up to the #Columbia river. I was sad to hear about the fires ravaging this area along with all the other horrible events in the world lately. 😘 to you #Oregon from the @la.starboy. Where's my #stark family?? #gameofthrones soundtrack #drone #jonsnow Super #roughedit
That time I saw the sun's atmosphere with my own eyes.. 🤓😎 #totalsolareclipse #solarprominence #solarcorona
I cannot believe it's been a month since I witnessed the Great American Total Solar Eclipse! Best experience of my life! The journey there to chase it was quite the adventure! Cannot wait to witness the next one!

"What impressed me most was its ending. A tiny dot of bright light appeared, and suddenly spread out in half a second to become too bright to look at without filters. It was the sun coming back with a roar - and that was the most magnificent astronomical spectacle I ever saw." - Isaac Asimov
From the book by Richard Cohen, "Chasing the Sun: The Epic Story of the Star That Gives Us Life"

"Больше всего меня поразил финал. Появляется крошечная точка света и внезапно, за долю секунды, расширяется и становится слишком яркой, чтобы смотреть без фильтров. Это триумфальное возвращение Солнца и самое впечатляющее астрономическое зрелище, какое мне только доводилось видеть." - Айзек Азимов
Из книги Ричарда Коэна: "В погоне за Солнцем: Головокружительная история звезды, дающей нам жизнь"

Our very own and very magnificent star, the Sun.
From #NASA picture of The day. "The Big Corona"
Image Credit & Copyright: Alson Wong
Explanation: Most photographs don't adequately portray the magnificence of the Sun's corona. Seeing the corona first-hand during a total solar eclipse is unparalleled. The human eye can adapt to see coronal features and extent that average cameras usually cannot. Welcome, however, to the digital age. The featured picture is a combination of forty exposures from one thousandth of a second to two seconds that, together, were digitally combined and processed to highlight faint features of the total solar eclipse that occurred in August of 2017. Clearly visible are intricate layers and glowing caustics of an ever changing mixture of hot gas and magnetic fields in the Sun's corona. Looping prominences appear bright pink just past the Sun's limb. Faint details on the night side of the New Moon can even be made out, illuminated by sunlight reflected from the dayside of the Full Earth.

#Science is cool. This #TBT to the #totalsolareclipse one month ago, captures the different phases of totality.
I know this is hardly relevant anymore, but I have found it near impossible to put into words the surreal experience that was totality. Nonetheless, Cody has managed to do so in a lovely way (not all that surprising - he is good at everything) and you can read what he wrote at the link in my bio. There's also a one minute audio clip taken during the total eclipse that gives me goosebumps every time☽ photo by my stepdad Ross Hauswirth

The 2017 total solar eclipse was the most incredible show from nature I've ever witnessed. Initially, part of me wanted to be at the Oregon Eclipse Gathering but the moment I got picked up at the airport, and we meandered down to SC, I was thrilled to be with @monstarlilar and her man and close to home. Despite feeling smaller in the universe, I feel more connected than ever to the stars. Spend more time in nature, it teaches us so much. Grateful for the kind photographer next to us who sent us these photos so we can continue reliving the wonder #tbt #totalsolareclipse #crosshill #natureswonders #eclipsephotography #space #universe #moon #sun #lifelessons #nature

Throw back to a month ago 21•8•17 [Total solar eclipse] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀A minute before the totality, it was just like a normal sunny day with hot weather and a blinding sun, but after that: the sky went dark, the temperature dropped, and birds flew away. The sun's corona become VISIBLE to naked eye. The most amazing moment was when the first beads of sunlight emerged from behind the moon seconds after the totality, it felt like 'hope shines the brightest in the darkest moments'. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #totalsolareclipse #uniqueexperience #diamondringeffect #eclipseshadows #throwback #wyoming

Has it been a month already since the August 21st eclipse? I still get chills thinking about it. I took this 30-second video during the two minutes of totality so I could show it to my family in Denver. It's a hopeless mimic of watching the actual total solar eclipse, but the most glaring difference is that the black dot in the video is actually much bigger in the sky and not surrounded by a white ring, but instead white wispy tendrils of wavy light. Oy. It's still emblazoned on my brain. The next TSE is on July 2, 2019, at La Serena, Chile. Who wants to go on a little adventure?
