Wooden Toys of Varanasi.
Wooden toy-making is a traditional craft in the Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh. Bright and colourful lacquered toys are made by clusters of skilled craftsmen.
While roaming in one of the markets near the ghats when we just happen to mention it someone that we want to see the process of wooden toy making from scratch. That person directed us to one of these small size villages within benaras but a little far from the ghats.
Once we reached, we immediately made conclusion that we have come to a wrong place and we should head back, as there was nothing special going on from the looks of it. But after 10 mins of looking around, asking the shopkeepers and locals we reached where we wanted to and I got super excited like a 5 year old kid. Small-small shops doing different steps of toy making process .
The beauty of wooden toys is in the fact that they are carved by craftsmen and painted by them. They show a perspective of life. Craftsmen make them according to their knowledge of history, Indian mythology, Mahabharata, Ramayana, etc. Wooden toy makers are the few craftsmen, who are pursuing the art of toy making over generations. A set of artists are only skilled to make the toys of wood and finish the structure for paint and there are separate families of artists whose soul job is to paint the toys.
We ended up meeting this beautiful family of 4 living in a small room and as mentioned above their soul job was to paint the toys after carving process happens.
This picture is taken while the woman of the house is putting varnish after the paint is dried. And what they get in terms of wages to paint with such detailing every time on every toy is mere 300 bucks a day.
Nevertheless, after every kid in the city I know of - moved to PlayStation, mobiles, ipads etc ( I don't even know what toys are kids playing with these days). There is this art that is still there and hopefully will be there for few more years. And there will be kids who are not living in cities and probably these are the only toys that bring the utmost joy to their lives.
·👾· Toys are cute! I've had this idea on my mind for a long time: creating a simple, cute toy prototype. It still needs to be partially dressed, painted and stuff but this is the final design. My love for vinyl toys and collectible creatures has no end ❤ so I'm working on these small buddies.
(I'm talking about the one in the middle, pear and cloud are just rubber toys I bought 😀)
Helloooo! I'm happy to say that my Etsy is up and running again with this new addition to the shop! Ain't it a cutie?
